Room 26 Weekly News
October 30-November 3, 2017
Announcements
It's hard to believe we are at the end of October already! As a reminder, there will be NO costumes at school on Halloween (Tuesday, October 31st).
This Friday, November 3, is our annual Locks of Love event. Please join us on the blacktop at 8:45 for this special event where students, parents, and staff members donate hair to make wigs for people battling cancer. I am so proud of Grace, Ayla, Amelie, and JJ for donating their hair for this important cause!
Academic Updates
Math
This week, we will be working on Adding and Subtracting Decimals. The key to being successful with this skill is lining up the decimal points before you start. I will be encouraging students to turn their lined paper sideways, so they can use the lines of the paper to keep the place values lined up correctly.
Language Arts
We are concluding our ELA Unit 3. Our focus for this unit has been on nonfiction text that corresponds with our science unit on plants and cells. In writing, students are working on citing text evidence, paraphrasing the author/expert's words, and synthesizing information to support their claims in a 5-paragraph informative essay format. We have also been working on using an outline to plan a multi-paragraph essay.
Science
We are finishing up our unit on Plants and Cells. Students will be completing a Study Guide on Monday. They have also done a research project and poster on parts of a cell, as well as taken excellent Cornell Notes from our textbook chapter. Our Science test will be on Friday (11/3), so students should be studying their notes and study guide for homework each evening this week.
Social Studies
Our next States & Capitals test is this Friday (11/3), so students should be studying for their current region every evening this week as part of their homework. (The next test will be given on 11/17.)
