Needs vs Wants
Next week we will be discussing the differences between needs and wants.
We will also have our Jackson Pride assembly for the month of November, play Jackson Pride Bingo as a school, go to the media center to use the makerspace and do some of our "regular" routine learning as well (writing, handwriting, etc.).
Yay for family!
Have a wonderful start to this holiday season as we all remember our gratitude attitudes! ;)
What we learned
Take a look into our class
Reading + Theme:
- We spent our week learning about what families look like, how they act and the how differences between each family makes them special. The kindergartners drew family portraits which will be displayed in our hallway for some time before they are sent home. Thanks for sending in the family pictures. The kindergartners were so proud to share their families with one another!
Writing:
- The kindergartners got to practice the editing strategy dot and say. Some even got their very own dot and say pen! Dot and say helps us to make sure all parts of the sentence are correct and we aren't missing any words.
Poem/Phonics:
- Poem: Jack Sprat
- New HFW: no, his, so
- We talked about vowels quite a bit this week--how they can be short and long; how they are present in every word; and we even talked about the special y rule (just a bit). We also began a program called Rime Magic. This program helps kindergartners see word families at a quick rate.
- How are the HFW cards going at home? Making this a part of the every day routine will help instill confidence in young learners!
Math:
- Kindergartners practiced making 1-6 in a variety of ways and we wrote addition sentences for these as well.
- We practiced number order by playing the card game garbage. How do you play? Get a deck of cards and remove the Jacks and Queens. The Ace will represent the number one and the King is a wild card. Each player gets 10 cards. Lay them out in two groups of five (like a ten frame). Pick a card from the extras and replace it in the correct 10 frame spot. If you put a 2 in the 2 spot and flip a 7, move the 7 and keep replacing until you can no longer use a card--discard and repeat. As time moves on, the goal is for your child to replace cards without having to count to get to the right spot.
- We practiced counting down from 20 every day--an expectation for quarter 2.
