The WRCCS School Mentor Program
Multiple research studies document the benefits that students receive through mentoring programs. We at the Wisconsin Resource Center for Charter Schools (WRCCS) are leveraging the benefits of mentoring by creating a statewide charter school mentor program. The WRCCS Mentor Program was created in 2018 to help new DPI charter school sub-grantees develop sustainable, high-performing charter schools across the state of Wisconsin. WRCCS has partnered each DPI charter school sub-grantee with a mentor school to provide guidance, motivation, and act as a thought partner as each sub-grantee strives to meet the needs of every student.
Mentor pairs collaborate to create action plans around a set of school competencies created by WRCCS to guide in the development and sustainability of school success. Ninety-six percent of schools in the mentor program reported they would recommend this program to other schools. The first year has not only been a huge success, it has been groundbreaking as it is the only school-school mentor program of its kind in the nation!
Mentor schools are getting just as much benefit out of the program. Mentor schools have reported that they are gaining new insights and learning new practices from their partner school. Ninety-six percent of mentor schools reported that they would be a mentor school again in the future and would recommend mentoring to other schools. Mentor schools have been specifically chosen because they have demonstrated sustainability and have continuously met their performance measures. A strong relationship between the mentor and sub-grantee makes all the difference in the success of the mentor program.
