Principal's Message
Fall is in the air! We are excited for our first annual Monster Bash next Friday, October 25. We will be sending home some important information detailing the day early next week with regard to the pumpkin activity for sixth graders. Please be on the lookout. During the activity portion of the day, sixth grade students will have the option to paint a pumpkin, carve a pumpkin, or select another fall-themed activity. We thank the Windham PTA for generously helping to sponsor this activity! Separately, on October 31, students and staff may wear Halloween costumes to school; please make sure that costumes are appropriate.
Today, your child received a Trimester 1 Progress Report as well as a Fall NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) family report. The format of the Progress Report takes on a new look both here and at WMS, combining standards progress with a traditional grading scale. This is a unique approach to assessing student growth. Our ultimate goal is to present information is the most clear and effective manner and our team here is working hard to make sure our product lives up to own expectations.
This past Tuesday evening, we had the opportunity to present at a Windham School Board meeting. Our Global Greetings initiative was highlighted and Zoe, Ella, Michael, Abhi and Paula were some of our student representatives in attendance to talk about the experience they had creating a "Global Greeting" video message. This initiative ties in directly to our school's mission that encapsulates the following: love for learning, respectful relationships, grit, equity, diversity and global citizenship. We are heavily invested in using green screen technology to not only highlight teaching and learning, but to also improve our overall communication footprint as a school. We hope that you are enjoying the fruits of our labor!
We are also working to develop an intramural offering here at WCS which is something brand new and exciting for our school. In order to gauge student interest, we will be sending home information shortly to determine how we can best schedule these after-school activities and secure appropriate staffing. Finally, next week is Red Ribbon Week! We are celebrating a drug-free and healthy lifestyle with individual spirt days. Included below is a graphic to show our plans for each day.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Rory O'Connor
