Miller March Madness: Tournament of Books!

Big picture

Read Across America is Thursday, March 2nd. To celebrate a love of reading, we will kick off Read Across America with a month-long tournament of books, Miller March Madness. Sixteen picture books will be competing in this school wide event. At the close of the event all 16 books will be donated to our library for students to check out and enjoy!

The books will face off in a 4 weeklong competition to decide the 2023 Book of the Year. The tournament is housed in a Canvas course. Here, students, families and teachers can view a read aloud done by Walter Miller Guest Readers, vote for their favorite books, view poll updates, and receive round winner announcements. The books will be shared at school, but families are welcome to revisit them at home. To participate, be sure to have your student accept the Canvas course invite.

COMING IN APRIL!

Academic Support at Miller

Our mission at Walter Miller ES is to provide every student with a quality educational experience in a safe, challenging, and engaging environment. At Miller, we have 2 Title I Reading Specialists and 3 federal instructional assistants (FIA). Mrs. Gansor and Ms. Maurizi, Title I Reading Specialists, work with students daily to help support their individual needs in literacy. Mrs. Falkavitz, Mrs. Fishman and Mrs. Sheehy, FIAs, provide targeted support to students in both math and reading. In addition to the Title I staff, Miller has a NSD Reading Specialist, Mrs. Douherty and MTSS Education Specialist, Mrs. Ritchie. The Miller team works together to provide student interventions, parent workshops and teacher professional learning.

Reading Specialist Conferences

The Walter Miller ES Reading Specialists held midyear parent conferences in February. Many thanks to the parents that attended. If your student works with Mrs. Dougherty, Mrs. Gansor or Ms. Maurizi and you were unable to attend meetings at the scheduled times, please reach out to make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress in their reading groups. Regularly scheduled reading group conferences will be held again at the end of the year, but you never have to wait, teacher/parent communication is just an email or phone call away. The reading specialists are happy to meet with at any time throughout the year to discuss your student’s progress.
