Holidays Around the World by Callisto Taraborelli
There are many different winter holidays around the world, the most well-celebrated including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, St. Lucia Day, and St. Nicholas Day.
Christmas is a religious winter holiday celebrated on December 25th. On Christmas Day, presents are dropped off under a Christmas evergreen tree by Santa, or St. Nick. Christmas is a very family-oriented holiday. One tradition that occurs on Christmas is the Italian tradition of eating 7 fishes.
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that lasts 8 nights annually. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Each day represents the miracle that a small amount of oil lasted for 8 days.
Kwanzaa is an African holiday that is celebrated from December 26th to January 1st. It is a celebration of the African culture and traditional values.
Winter Solstice, or Yule, is a Wiccan/Pagan holiday originally celebrated by Germanics. It celebrates the festival of lights, and the rebirth of the coming year.

How Can I Be a Good American? By Corrine Myers
The people around me, standing on the same ground as me, in this same country, are Americans. We’re all different, we may look different or act differently, show our pride differently or express ourselves differently. But the one similarity that sticks out most, the one similarity anyone can identify within this country, is that we are all connected. We are all Americans.
Being a good American isn’t just being good, or nice, or kind. It’s everything- someone's character, the way they hold themselves, everything that makes a person, themselves. Being a good American is composed of so many factors. Anyone can be a good American.
The three characteristics that stick out most to me are a respectful, responsible, and a person who sees our nation for what it is, not what they want it to be.
Respectful.
A respectful person is someone who considers the feelings of others. Someone whose presence at first glance is welcoming, a warm smile. One who supports and accepts the people around them. A respectful person is someone who looks at the world with acknowledgment, someone who is ready to stand their ground yet allows opinions to flow through their own.
Responsible.
Responsibility can be shown in various ways; exactly why it makes a good American. A responsible individual takes credibility for their actions, isn’t afraid to have made an error and face confrontation. A responsible individual honors their commitments, honors their journey, and never takes work from another as their own. Each step we take towards being responsible helps raise relationships with those around us, we gain the respect of others.
Seeing our nation for what it is, not what we want it to be.
A good American who sees our nation for what it is, is someone not afraid of the environment around them. When you see something for how it is, you take in the flaws, you learn honesty, and you work with what you have. When you see something for what you wish it was, it’s irrational. It’s false. You can’t fix anything if something is perfect- which nothing is. A good American strives to improve, to help the areas around them.
A good American is someone consisting of each and one of these traits. A good American is someone not afraid- someone ready to take action.
Book Reviews
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Reviewed by Samantha Beury
Every year in the nation of Panem, two children from each district through the ages 12-18 are chosen to fight in the Hunger Games. With one boy and one girl from each district, there are 24 tributes that will be seen on live TV as they fight until only one is left. For Katniss Everdeen, survival is second nature. When she hears her 12-year-old sister’s name called out at the reaping as the district’s tribute, Katniss steps up to take her place. She knew it would be dangerous, and there was a chance she wouldn’t return to District 12, but she would do anything to save her little sister, Prim.
The Hunger Games is an interesting book to read full of action, love, survival, and many cliff hangers that will intrigue you to read more. It is very easy to follow along the plot and the descriptions in the book put a clear image of all the characters and settings in the reader’s mind.
I really enjoyed the book because it was filled with lots of action and constant suspense. After reading it, I was always left with more questions. The curiosity always caused me to read for hours.
The Gifted by Heather Swain - Reviewed by Corrine Myers
What if you were born into a world where it’s illegal to do the things you thrive most in? What if it was illegal to simply express yourself, to do the things you love? The book Gifted by Heather Swain portrays a futuristic, sci-fi experience that brings the reader in for a close look at two main characters and their lives: Zimri and Orpheus. Two characters never supposed to meet yet destined to cross paths. Two people who couldn’t be any more different, yet both share a similar “force” that brings them to each other. In this world where people are expected to fit in, and to such measures that individuals can be created to fit into their place in society, these two characters must rebel against their society, they must cross an impossible bridge, and risk their own lives to follow their own aspirations. The only question that crosses one mind must be: will they be able to do it?
“A book with a dystopian society, romance, thrilling events, and suspense perfectly portrays Gifted. I was hooked; this book was something I couldn’t put down- I recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.” – Corrine Myers, a student at Bunker Hill Middle School
