Admissions Beat
Middle School | February 2020
Greetings from the Admissions Office!
We are grateful for the thought and care that you put into each component of your application –and the energy that you have invested into this process. Our Admissions Committee is now reviewing applications and so appreciating the opportunity to learn more about you!
Decisions will be available through Ravenna on Friday, March 6 at 4 PM. If you have any questions before that time, please let us know.
In the meantime, here's a look at what's been happening in and around Burke this month ...
Down by the Creek
Our proximity to Rock Creek Park (just 15 minutes on foot) is ideal for hands-on earth science. The 6th grade has been discussing how streams flow and how people can affect this process – and this winter, they ventured to Rock Creek to see water in action.
They walked from Peirce Mill to Bluff Bridge, drew maps of the stream, hypothesized where it was flowing fastest, and finally tested those theories with a "Poohsticks" competition (as in, Winnie the Pooh): floating carefully-engineered stick-boats beneath a bridge to see which emerges first.
Service Learning
Let's Get Animated
- In Science class, 7th graders learned about and then used stop motion filmmaking to detail their understanding of the human digestive system. Check it out here!
- In Directions & Avenues (visual art) class, 7th graders created abstract art works with cool and warm colors and then animated those works on their iPads. Watch the process!
Experiencing the Civil Rights Movement
Working with Freedom Lifted, students visit sites in Birmingham and Montgomery, including Sixteenth St. Baptist Church, National Voting Rights Museum, Rosa Parks Museum and Library, and the Civil Rights Memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center, among many others.
Breakfast with Purpose
In recent weeks, students researched Middle Eastern recipes before cooking up their own dishes and serving them at a potluck breakfast, where they talked with their families about supporting refugees and asylum-seekers.
And of course ...
