Jarrell Elementary Newsletter - November 13, 2023
Greetings JES Community!
It is a big week at Jarrell Elementary. We have our very important Reading Interim Assessments for our 3rd - 5th graders this week. Please make sure that your student is well-rested and on time, so they can do their very best. This assessment gives us important information about grade level readiness in reading and math.
Check out the RSVP for our Thanksgiving Lunch on Thursday, November 16th including the times for each grade level lunch.
Our Thanksgiving Pies for Teachers was such a great success last year that we will be doing it again this year! Please plan to sign up to bring a teacher a pie from Wednesday, November 15th to Thursday, November 16th. We can even pick them up in the parent pick-up or drop-off car line!
As always, we are to help in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to reach out!
With gratitude,
Lara Hutchinson

Students are encouraged to pick at least 5 of the 20 Bluebonnet nominees for the 2023-2024 school year.

Students who read 5 Bluebonnet books by the end of January, will also be invited to a bluebonnet breakfast hosted at the JES library.
Students can find the bluebonnet books online on the Sora app. Here are the directions to log in:

Menu change next week.
Tuesday’s Lunch Menu will be what’s scheduled for Thursday and Thursday will be our Thanksgiving Lunch .
PRE-K
This week in pre-k we will begin learning that living things breathe, eat, grow, move on their own, and reproduce. Nonliving things do not. In math, we will begin comparing shapes by their size, number of sides, and angles. In Literacy, we will continue listening to the ending sounds in words to recognize rhyming words, each letter of the alphabet has a name and represents a sound, a name begins with an uppercase letter, and recognizing environmental print to understand words carry meaning.
KINDER
1st GRADE
2nd GRADE
In Skills we are learning tricky spellings for the /oe/ sound. We are reading our grade level reader, "Kids Excel." In Math we are wrapping up Module 3 on place value. In Knowledge we are starting our unit on Cycles of Nature. In Science we are learning about Earth's materials and natural resources.
3rd GRADE
In reading this week we will be working on the skill of analyzing plot elements through learning about Ancient Rome. In math, we will continue on working our multiplication facts for 6, 7, 8, and 9. In preparation for our STAAR Reading Interim this week, we will be practicing reading a story and answering questions and writing a written response. We know these kiddos are going to rock their first practice STAAR test! We are all so proud of all of the growth we have seen thus far and can't wait to see more!
4th GRADE
Fourth grade students continue reading Treasure Island and writing summaries for each chapter. We also are discussing characters and the changes they undergo throughout the book. In social studies we wrap up our research on European Explorers in Texas. In math we are still working in Unit 3, Multiplication and Division, but with a focus on division of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. In science we will continue with Unit 4 on Force and Motion. We will be talking more specifically and investigating the effects of an object such as a push or a pull, gravity, friction or magnetism.
5th GRADE
In math we will wrap up our division unit and complete test corrections. We will then review past skills until Thanksgiving break.
As we wrap up our exploration of landforms in science, your child will delve into the captivating processes that give rise to these geographical features.
This week in ELA, we will work on finishing unit 3 with more writing practice and comparing and contrasting. However, we will also review for an end-of-assessment test, and we will also have our first Reading STAAR interim, which serves as a practice and measure for end-of-year STAAR testing, on November 14th. Please be sure students are well rested this day and have a healthy breakfast. Thank you so much! :)
Library
PreK and Kindergarten will be starting a new nursery rhyme: "Jack and Jill". Students will become familiar with the new rhyme and label parts of the story.
1st & 2nd grade: I can make inferences by using textual evidence to support my thinking so that I can develop an understanding of what is happening in the book "Turk and Runt" by Lisa Wheeler.
3rd-5th grade: I can explain the purpose of nonfiction text features by analyzing the text features found in a sample text so that I can better understand a nonfiction text.
Just a friendly reminder that as the JES counselor, I am always available should you have any questions or concerns related to your child.
Please contact me if you would like me to check in with them or offer extra support. I can be reached at 512-746-2103 or via email: Marilyn.alvarez-brya@jarrellisd.org
