CAMP ACADEMICS

GREETINGS

The warm weather has hit! Along with the warm weather come allergies. Speaking of allergies, we are out of Kleenex. If you can send a box or two, it would be greatly appreciated.

Please continue to encourage your child to work hard and do their best every day. I would not want to see them catch "spring fever".

THREE RULES FOR SUCCESS

  1. I will be respectful
  2. I will be responsible
  3. I will do my best everyday

READING/WRITING

We are still looking at text features for non-fiction books. We have learned about bold words, table of contents, picture and captions, and why all of these elements are important to the reader. We will be writing a research paper on chicks. We will be gathering information about chicks and finding the right way to organize our ideas into an essay.

MATH

We are continuing to learn about 1/2 and 1/4 of an object. We have moved from identifying 1/2 and 1/4 of a shape to identifying these amounts in money. We are still working on basic facts. We do a skill sheet at the beginning of math every day. The students have 10 minutes to do anywhere from 15-30 problems. Some of the students are finished within 2 minutes. Building a strong math facts foundation is absolutely critical for student success in problem solving and multi-step problems.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will be working on map skills for the next 4 weeks. The students will be looking at many different kinds of maps: maps of the classroom, maps of the school building, and maps of the playground just to mention a few. We will move into reading more sophisticated maps in the near future.

SCIENCE

CHICKS! We will be studying about the life cycle of chickens. We will have eggs in the library, and we will watch as the chicks hatch from them. We will be checking on them daily to see if any changes have occurred. We will learn many interesting pieces of information about them. I will be sending information out to you about how you can watch their progress on your computer.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... These are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.
