What is Transformation?

The uptake of DNA by bacteria.

Insertion of new genetic into nonbacterial cell.

What if the process of Transformation?

A gene from bacterial cell one is moved from bacterial cell one to bacterial cell two. This process of bacterial cell two taking up new genetic material is called transformation.

Importance of Transformation?

without transformation bacteria would not be able to take up the foreign DNA to make rDNA, therefore processes such as mass producing human insulin through bacterial reproduction would not be possible.

Example of Transformation...

A classic example of transformation would be treating a bacterial culture so that the bacterial cells take up plasmids you have introduced. This is how we make lots of copies of DNA and how we make lots of proteins from a gene we have put into an expression vector and used to transform a modified bacterial cell.
