History of Czechoslovakia

-Did you know that the Czechs are Slavic people, closely related to the Slovaks in speech and custom, but with a distinct history and national identity.

-Bohemia was ruled for the time by the house of Luxembourg

-In the fifteenth century, the university became the center of a church reform movement led by Jan Hus (1369-1415), who was burned as a heretic in 1415

Why the Czechoslovakians came

-From the 16th century until 1918, the Czech lands were part of the Habsbourg Empire

-the Czechs needed special permission to move away, or marry somebody from a another parish or manor

-The 19th century was a century of political unrest throughout Europe

When the Czechoslovakians came

-The Czechoslovakians first came during the 19th century and some are still coming now

Where the Czechs settled

-The Czechs mostly settled in New York and California

Traditions the Czechs had

-Czech Americans traditional costumes were worn as everyday apparel

-community festivals such as polka celebrations and houby (mushroom) hunting contests continue to play a prominent role in Czech American culture

-2 cups of butter(1pound), softened

-2 cups of sugar

-4 large egg yolks

-4 cups flour

-2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans

-1(8-to12-ounce) container almond paste

-1(12 ounce) strawberry filling

-Confectioners' sugar
