Physical Education Update
August 2017 PE Edition
WELCOME TO OES PHYSICAL EDUCATION....
We have kicked off the 2017 - 2018 school year and it's going to be a fabulous!! I am so excited to see all my students (it takes 4 days to see everyone) and find out what they've been up to over the summer.
We will try to pack a lot into the year as we only see kids between 43 and 45 times during the year.
Here is a peek at the beginning of the year activities.
K-2 Info --
Students will be learning about spacial awareness and playing some low organized games. Mr. Fairley, my student teacher, will be taking over classroom duties in a few weeks. He will be teaching a jump rope unit and has some great activities planned.
3-5 Info -
We will have our Run 4 Your Life program again this year. Everyone starts at 0 laps and will try to earn as many as they can throughout the year. We have mileage clubs every 5 miles. I would expect to see some students reaching the 5 mile club in October. We will be administering fitness testing in the Fall and Spring. Students just need to do their best and not stress about it. They will do curl-ups, push-ups, sit and reach and an Endurance Run (1/2 mile for 3rd grade and 1 mile for 4th and 5th grade). These tests provide us with a starting point so we know what areas to work on during the year.
These tests are NOT GRADED. Students just do the best they can do. If you have questions or concerns please e-mail or call me. These students will also be participating in a jump rope unit with Mr. Fairley, my student teacher.
We will also be participating in the American Heart Association Jump Rope 4 Heart fundraiser which will kick off in the middle of September. More information will come in a few weeks about that.
** DOCTORS NOTES**
Please make sure your child has a doctors note if they are unable to participate in PE. This is essential so we can keep your child safe and know what skills they are able to practice and what we need to be cautious of. A parent note is good for one class and then a doctor's note is needed if the condition continues. When in doubt, please contact me.
I'm looking forward to a great year and can't wait to get the kids moving, having fun and continuing their journey of learning fun skills to keep them physically active.

A Bit About Mrs. Peterson.....
I am starting my 19th year of teaching physical education. I graduated from The University of Northern Iowa with a degree in K-12 Physical Education. I am currently in an online cohort through The University of Northern Iowa and will earn my masters degree in Physical Education - Teaching Pedagogy. I love UNI and have a lot of purple in my wardrobe. I am married and have two boys who keep us very busy. You may see me at the soccer or baseball field as well as the basketball court. We are on the go, most of the year. That being said, when we do have free time, we love to be outside golfing, walking, at our family farm and spending time with our wonderful friends and family. My husband graduated from Iowa State so we do try to attend a few ISU activities and cheer for Cyclones.
I am a past president of my state PE and Health association (IOWA AHPERD) and keep busy serving on that board as convention manager. I am active in Oskaloosa and just filled a spot on the Mahaska County Recreation Foundation Board. I love being an advocate for physical activity and have served on several community committee's over the years for that reason. To me physical activity isn't just about running and working out. It's about moving and finding something you love to do and doing it! I worked in Yellowstone during college and that opened my eyes to recreation and a entirely different avenue of physical activity. I LOVE being outside and in nature. I am very passionate about the National Parks and of course Yellowstone.
If you ever have questions on any of those topics, I'd be happy to chat with you.

Mountains
Montana is where I graduated high school and the mountains are a part of my soul. I LOVE going to visit and make a point to go every summer.
Family Vacations
It's important to me to teach my kids to love nature and to step away from all the technology and enjoy the wonderful things around them. This was a fun hike we did in Colorado this summer.
KIDS FIRST
My family is very important to me and I learn from my own kids, how kids really feel about lots of things. I always try to do what's best for kids, even if that means pushing them out of their comfort zone a bit.
Meet My Student Teacher ...Mr. Fairley...
My name is Mark Fairley and I am a senior at Central College. Throughout the past four years I have majored in Physical Education and Health and I also have a coaching endorsement. I will be student teaching this semester to cap off my college journey. I am overjoyed to have been placed at Oskaloosa Elementary School with Mrs. Jennifer Peterson for my first placement and then in Pella Middle School with Mrs. Amy Belding for my second placement. I am ready to learn from both of these incredible experiences and I am really looking forward to buildingrelationships with students and teaching them about the importance of healthy living and physical activity. I am originally from Dubuque, IA and played a number of sports throughout my high school career. At Central College I am involved in quite a few clubs and I am also a member of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams, where I have had the opportunity to race all around the country. Throughout the past couple of months I was a summer camp counselor at a camp called Forest Springs in northern Wisconsin. I hope to use the valuable information and skills that I learned this summer and apply that directly to the classroom.
