January 10, 2021
Shuksan Families,
I hope you all had a peaceful winter break. Unfortunately our Nation did not start 2021 as peacefully as we would hope. I am proud of how well our teachers processed with students the confusing events that unfolded last week. Teachers made space for students to learn about the events that took place on 1/6/21, ask questions and dialogue with their classmates.
"Helping Kids Understand the Riots at the Capital" is a great resource for families to use from the Child Mind Institute. It reminds us that children are looking to us to help them understand tragic events and manage their emotions. They suggest that, "...making space for questions will help kids feel less anxious." At any time, our counseling staff is also willing to talk with students and families about big emotions and managing them. (See below for contact information)
I just want to acknowledge that the prospect of returning to "life as normal" raises concerns and anxiety for many. We will continue to face uncertainty and change. Please know that our staff will continue to work hard and thoughtfully. We want to make 2021 a great year for our students and hope this includes seeing them in person.
Until then, please take good care.
