Yemen

Cultural Differences, Yemen vs. U.S.

I think that the most major difference between our cultures is the visiting rituals. Another difference is the greetings the people of Yemen do. One final major difference is the marriage and dating systems.

MAJOR DIFFERENCE- VISITING IN YEMEN

Yemen Visiting.

FACT 1

Visiting is the most culturally different trait vs. the U.S. In Yemen, women and men visit completely seperated. The women go in a completely different room than the men, and if the men want something to eat, the women are expected to cook it right away.

FACT 2

Usually at visitings, men chew an addictive drug called qat, a stimulant that increases your appetite. When women chew qat, they must be out of sight.

U.S. Visiting.

FACT 1

In the U.S., visiting is so very different from visiting in Yemen. As you have most likely observed, women and men are not seperated at all. There is no seperation between people at all.

FACT 2

As i previously stated, the people of Yemen chew an addictive plant, qat. When in America, you will most likely not see drugs at normal visitings. In America we instead treat the guests to snacks or a meal, not drugs.

OTHER DIFFERENCES- MARRIAGE AND GREETINGS

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Yemen greeting.

FACT 1

Respect is the most important thing in a Yemen greeting. A greeting depends on how old the person who is being greeted is, and also what gender. Females greet out of sight.

FACT 2

Common greetings between Yemeni men and women are Assalaamu Alaykum (peace be upon you) and Sabah al-kair (good morning)

U.S. greeting.

FACT 1

In U.S., sadly to say, when we are greeting each other, respect is not a top priority in most cases. Things like, "What's up?" and, "How's it going?" Really there is nothing special about our greetings. Sometimes we even use slang terms like "sup".

FACT 2

Once again, unlike Yemen, there is no separation between men and women. All people greet in the same way in the same place when they meet each other.

Yemen marriage.

FACT 1

In Yemen, a marriage is almost fully decided by other family members. When the family says that the two will be getting married, they will get married at that time. This is not as bad as it sounds, as the person still gets to choose who they marry, so they do get that much.

FACT 2

At marriages, both women and men once again chew qat, but for once, they are allowed to be in the same room while doing so.

U.S. marriage.

FACT 1

In the U.S., marriages are fully planned by the couple. Even though that the couple decides to get married, it is right for the man in the marriage to ask for his father-in-law's consent first.

FACT 2

Once again, on the subject of drugs, we do not use them at any formal meetings including and especially weddings.
