Writing
Students will be finishing their unit on personal narratives..
We’ll continue to work on our writing stamina and productivity. Third graders should be able to write a page long entry in one sitting. In Writing, we continue working on our Foundational Skills to improve spelling and writing conventions.
Reading
Students are reading short literary texts this month. They will be asked and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis of the answers. They will describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from figurative language. Students will distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. Students will explain how specific aspects of text illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting). Please encourage your child to read daily and discuss what they’ve read with them
Math
This month students will:
represent and solve problems using multiplication and division,
understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division,
use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
