What are your favorite things at LHS?
My favorite thing about LHS is all the opportunities to find community there is. Lansing offers so many places to find people who love the things you do, whether it be clubs like GSA, MSU, or Math Club, activities like Debate/Forensics, Band, and Sports, or our more unique classes like Teaching as a Career! I myself have found such community and friendship in band and debate/forensics, in such a huge way that I never thought possible. It’s to the point where the fact that I’ll have to leave LHS’s debate/forensics and Band after graduation is probably one of the saddest things for me to face as a senior, even knowing that those activities will continue to exist in college. Finding those activities and people you connect with on a deeper level is what has really defined my experience at Lansing High School.
What does a drum major do?
Being a drum major means an impossibly long list of things to me. For instance, leading the band means I have to be adaptable, from getting the band to play during surprise timeouts at games, to keeping the show going in 30 mph winds. The ability to be adaptable and make choices I can commit to quickly are skills I use everyday as a drum major. I also have to be a mentor figure for the band, which means I need the patience to repeatedly explain concepts, and to understand how best to get a message across the a band of over 100 people. Though it can sometimes be tiring, that opportunity to help others in band learn and grow on an individual and group level is something I cherish deeply - truthfully, being a drum major is one of those experiences that really solidified my belief that I want to become a teacher. There are honestly so many little things that go into my job as a drum major, but it’s those mundane, everyday things that really makes every performance come together to make something that everyone can be proud of.
Congrats Mr. Hanson - This weeks Staff Spotlight
We're excited to share with you all the great things our staff members do for our students and community. This week we feature Jake Hanson:
