Help support the new AMMS Virtual Reality Lab by donating USED iPhones!
Imagine exploring the Eiffel Tower right from your very own desk in French class or experience walking on the moon in your science class. Virtual Reality allows students to explore far off places without ever leaving the classroom.
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
The request for Apple iPhone(s) will allow us to build the virtual lab and overcome compatibility restraints. Requesting USED iPhone 6, 6Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7Plus. Apple iOS devices are able to seamlessly work with our system at Autrey MIll. Selecting iPhones offers an optimal experience for students to hone in on the virtual experience through the use of goggles that cannot be accomplished with iPads or laptop devices.
Check out the following website for more information!
Donations may be turned in to the school front office or to Mrs. Andrea Tseng-Rioux in the media center.

Social Studies
Next week, we will be wrapping up our unit on Latin America Economics and Government. For the first part of the week, students will be preparing for and having Market Day. On Wednesday, students will be wrapping up the graded portion of the Market Day/Economics assignment, which is for a quiz grade. Thursday will be a review day before the test over Latin America Economics and Government on Friday. A study guide for this test was shared with students electronically and on paper earlier this week. The test will be given digitally, using Quia, so students should be able to see and share their results with you quickly.
The following week, we will be starting our study of Latin American History. This unit will last until the week before Spring Break - we have currently planned the unit test for Tuesday, 3/27 (short answer portion) and Wednesday, 3/28 (multiple choice portion). In this first week of the unit, we will begin with Ancient Civilizations of Latin America - Maya, Inca, and Aztec. We will finish out the week learning about the Columbian Exchange (the introduction of Old World goods to the New World and vice versa) and how it transitioned into Triangle Trade.
ELA
ELA is beginning our next unit! This unit focuses on recognizing and understanding persuasive techniques, as well as using those techniques in various writing tasks and assignments. Grammatically, we are focusing on pronouns this unit, specifically pronoun case (subjective, objective, possessive.) Toward the end of the unit, we will focus on connotative and denotative word meaning.
Spanish
This past week we enjoyed hosting a visiting artist, Dave Holland, who provided our students with a workshop about the Rhythms of Latin America. Students learned that Latin American drum rhythms often spring from the spoken languages of the people who created them.
Students are practicing all four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. They are also learning how verb endings change to reflect the subject. We are still reading the novel “Las aventuras de Isabela”. Through Isabela’s perspective, we have been considering the difference between need and want. Isabela says her mom’s obsession with shoes is ridiculous. While she waits for her mom outside a shoe store in Guanajuato, Mexico, Isabela notices a poor mother and her children walking in the street. The mother asks Isabela for money to buy shoes for her children. Isabela looks at their feet. None of them have shoes. She asks her mom to buy shoes for the family.
Please remind your student to practice Quizlet and listen to the audio of the book every day. The total practice time should be 15 minutes. Thanks for your support from home.

We are working on Unit 5, Geometry. We have worked on finding area of triangles with a formula (A= or )and finding the area of trapezoids and irregular-shaped polygons by composing and decomposing shapes(breaking the shapes into triangles, rectangles, and squares, finding the separate areas, and adding them together.) (6.G.1) Next, we will be identifying 3-dimensional shapes and drawing the nets to represent those shapes. Then, we will find the surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms. (6.G.4) We are scheduled to have a quiz on Thursday 2/15 over area of 2D shapes, identifying 3D shapes, drawing nets, and finding the surface area of rectangular prisms.
Next, we will be finding the volume of rectangular prisms using the formula V= l w h. (6.G.2)
6A:
After finishing our ratios and proportions unit, we will now begin our 2D geometry unit. We will begin with classifying triangles (7.G.2), types of angles (7.G.5), and finding angle measurement (7.G.5). We have the quiz scheduled for 2/21. Next, we will find the area of 2D shapes including triangles, trapezoids, regular polygons, and irregular figures (6.G.1).
7A:
After finishing our ratios and proportions unit, we will now begin our Geometry unit. We will begin with classifying triangles (7.G.2), types of angles (7.G.5), and finding angle measurement (7.G.5). We have the quiz scheduled for 2/21. Next, we will find the area of circles (7.G.4) and find cross sections of 3D shapes (7.G.3).
Science:
After finishing our Weather vs Climate unit, we will be spending the next two weeks focusing on severe weather: hurricanes, thunderstorms, and tornadoes. Students will be creating Public Service Announcements about one type of severe weather. Students will also take a quiz over severe weather on Wednesday, February 21st, and the projects will be due Friday, February 23rd.
Following our study of severe weather, we will begin our Astronomy unit on February 26th!
