NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY SEPTEMBER 3rd-LABOR DAY
Big Thank You!
We need your help collecting all our pledges. As a grade level, we raised over $1100.00 - our goal is to collect 100% of all pledges by 09/4/2018.
All sponsors that included their email address when making a pledge will receive an email reminder and instructions to pay their pledge. Please reach out to those sponsors who did NOT include their email address to let them know they can send cash or check to you, which will then be sent to school in your child’s collection envelope (coming home soon).
Finally, please encourage your student to thank all their sponsors for helping our school!
Thank you again for your support! Let me know if you have questions.
I-station is Coming September 4th!
Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep the night before testing and they should also have some breakfast before entering the classroom.
We have requested that you send earphones to use on the school ipads your child will be using. Sometimes this will allow students to focus better knowing that those are their headphone. Would you be so kind as to purchase a set of plug in style headphones with a 3.5 mm plug. They can be over the ear style or ear buds. We have found that 5 Below or similar big box stores have some that are affordable. These would be your child's to use and will be returned at the end of the year.
What are we learning?
We are working on building stamina while reading to ourselves, reading to others and working on writing, doing simple poetry and working on technology. We have gone over some strategies for reading a book and how to hold. These skills are needed as we move into a workshop environment. When the students have the skills to work independently then the teacher can move into meeting with small groups of students.
We are sending home 5 sight words to be practiced-ON TUESDAY. Your child will get List 1 of sight words for the week. It is a half sheet of 5 words. There is a QR code on the upper left hand side of the sheet. You will need a QR code reader downloaded from your app store to a cell phone or tablet. Newer Apple products have a QR reader built into the camera function. We have used QR Scan or Scan Life which are free APPS. When you scan the QR code it will take you to Vocabulary Spelling City.
If you are uncomfortable having your child work on the internet with spelling words, you can cut the words out of the page and place on index cards with tape or glue. Then they will need to write a sentence for each word. A paper will be provided for this task. We will be checking for mastery of these words once a week. We will let you know how they are progressing.
The words are: the, a, I, me, like
Social Studies- We will be working on citizenship and how voting works. We are focusing on voting and current historical figures.
Word Work- We will be starting a spelling program called Words Their Way. This program is designed to individualize vocabulary building. We have 4 groups-
Blue, Black , White and Silver. Our students have been placed in groups based on a spelling inventory. On Monday, they will bring home a baggie with words to cut out. Once they have cut out their words they are supposed to sort them based on a word pattern. All words have patterns- some are consonant vowel consonant (CVC words) and some maybe ambiguous vowels; another group could be working with just pictures, another group could be working with long vowel words. Each week the sort will be different. Here are video links showing how to do the sorts.

Math- We are working math routines and exploring numbers 0-10. During this exploration we will work on both addition and subtraction up to 10. We are starting intentional problem solving (IPS) where we will be working on strategies to solve word problems. Students will be able to explore math tools. Students should be able to explain how they are solving the problems. We are working on learning math routines for math workshop. When the students have mastered the skills to work independently then the teacher can move into meeting with small groups of students. We will be sending home an IPS problem on Wednesday to work on. It will be due on THURSDAY.
