Meaning, Music and Poetry: A Closer Look at Tefillah
Join scholars-in-residence Rabbi Elie Kaunfer and Joey Weisenberg for a special davening and learning experience
Musaf davening led by Joey Weisenberg: Merging traditional nusach (prayer chant) with soulful nigunim (melodies), we will cultivate the power of the communal voice through rhythm, spontaneous harmony, and careful listening.
Following kiddush: A Sympathetic Prayerbook Exegesis: New Interpretive Methods for Connecting to the Siddur
Rabbi Elie Kaunfer will lead a discussion. Is prayer meant to be read as prose or interpreted as poetry? This session will look at the many layers beneath the text of the siddur and see how words and phrases have the potential to unlock deeper meanings beneath the text. We will examine questions such as: Are traditional prayer formulas able to express my own values/ideas of prayer? How can I interpret the siddur in a grounded and traditional yet creative manner?
Between Mincha and Maariv: Yismah Moshe: A Literary Interpretation (4pm)
Yismah Moshe, recited in the Shabbat morning amidah, celebrates the receiving of the 10 commandments. But there are many surprises in this short prayer, which Rashi opposed so much he refused to say! What is the deeper meaning of the prayer, and how does it relate to our understanding of Shabbat, the receiving of the Law, and the character of Moshe? Join Rabbi Kaunfer as we explore the debate and sources surrounding this prayer.
Melave Malke: Transformation of a Nigun (6:15pm, note new location below)
Join Joey Weisenberg as he teaches us how to explore the soul of any melody. Based on his extensive experience with nigunim (wordless melodies), nusach (prayer chant) and other musical styles, Joey will focus on beautiful old melodies that may have been lost by history, as well as his own compositions. Together, we will collectively bring the music to life. Co-sponsored by The Davar Institute. R.S.V.P. to info@netivotshalomnj.org.
