The Western Heritage Program consists of safety clinics, regional competitions and a state competition.
Safety clinics
Safety clinics are offered in many different areas across the state from spring to early summer. The safety clinic allows youth to practice each opportunity that is offered in Western Heritage and work with adult volunteers to ensure that both the youth and their horse are safe to be able to participate in each activity.
At the safety clinic, you and your horse will work with an adult to explore how well you both can safely compete in a specific activity. Once certified, you and your horse are approved to participate in the regional event in each area you are certified.
2023 safety clinic
Southwest Region - May 21, Al & Kelly Jones Arena, Pipestone, 10 a.m.

Why do we have to do the animal id deadline?
Animal ID is a system for identifying and tracking all animals in the 4-H animal science project areas. This system is used to ensure the health and safety of the animal and to assist with the safety and fairness for the 4-H member. This is often seen as a time to kick start selecting and training animal project areas to showcase at the county and/or state fair.
When selecting animals, we know many have multiple youth that will be working with an animal. 4-H families are not able to identify animals as a family group. Under the 4-H Online ID process, families will need to enter each animal in one of the 4-H member profiles. We encourage that each member have a couple of animals under their profile if all plan to exhibit, but as long as an animal is identified under someone in the family group it is entered. You can make changes of which sibling will exhibit the animal up until county fair ID check-in.
This is not the only step when exhibiting animals for the county fair. July 5 is the Pipestone County 4-H Fair Registration deadline, this is the time when you will determine what classes the animals you plan/hope to exhibit will be shown in. Additional information about this process will be sent out to Pipestone County 4-H members in the coming months.
If you'd like to learn more information about animal ID please utilize the information that was sent out in the mail/email, visit the website at https://extension.umn.edu/projects-and-more/4-h-animal-id or reach out to 4-H staff at the Extension office by calling 507-825-1190.
