Abound Parenting
Thank you to our K and 1 families who attended our Abound Parenting presentation on Tuesday evening.
We are happy to announce that we have partnered with Abound Parenting to support reading with our Kindergarten families and are so excited about taking this journey with you!
Here is information on the program. If you missed the presentation, stay tuned for information from your classroom teacher to learn about the program and get set up with the app for your very own use! Together we can build strong, confident, happy readers!
Growing strong readers using Abound: A clear and easy way to set your child up to read well in the years ahead.
Research shows that most parents and caregivers don't know:
what skills their children need to learn at each age and grade,
how to playfully build those skills at home, and
whether their children are actually building those important skills at each step along the way.
That’s why we are partnering with Abound at Hathaway!
Joan Kelley will present a 45-minute session (plus q&a) that explains the key role families play in a child’s reading development, and how the Abound app makes this role easy for busy parents and caregivers.
Joan, a former teacher, spent over 10 years working at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), doing literacy research and helping schools and policymakers make sure classroom instruction focused on building the kind of skills children need to read successfully. She realized that busy parents and caregivers needed more support to do their part, and easy tools to use, so she left HGSE to start Abound Parenting She was educated at Harvard College ('84) and HGSE ('05). She lives with her husband, John, in Needham, and has three grown children.
Testimonials:
The presentation...a lightbulb went off in my head. I realized what I didn’t know, and also why I could feel good about some things I do already, too.

From Dr. Kenworthy
Dear Members of the PSD Community,
Beginning on Monday, March 7, 2022, the Portsmouth School District will be transitioning from our current masking policy to this recently revised policy. Starting on this date masks will be strongly recommended indoors in all PSD facilities but not required. I can also confirm today that due to recent changes in federal guidelines, this transition will also include PSD school buses. Please note that as we join the majority of school districts across our state and nation in this next phase of pandemic response we will keep all other COVID-19 mitigation strategies (to include proper ventilation, cleaning protocols, and distancing where appropriate) in place.
Now more than ever it will be important for everyone to monitor for symptoms, test when needed, and follow the proper steps for quarantining or isolating when necessary. Our school nurses will remain a key resource for any questions related to COVID-19.
Thank you for your continued cooperation in helping us to ensure the best possible learning experience for all PSD students.
My continued best wishes to all in the PSD community.

Hathaway COVID19 Updates
Talking to your Child(ren)
Our teachers will be taking time next week to explain to the students that on March 7th, some of their friends and faculty and staff will still be wearing masks and some will not. We will reassure them that this is a personal choice that we will respect. Please be sure to have conversations with your children over the break so we all are prepared for the new mask policy.
Mitigation Efforts
- Social distancing (at least 3 feet)
- Air purifiers/Windows
- Asymptomatic Testing
- Hand washing
- No use of water fountains
- Covid Absence Protocols
- Volunteers must be vaccinated
Vaccination Rates
For information about Pre K-12 School Cases and Vaccination rates please visit this site.
Return to the Cafeteria
- Students will sit with their classroom peers.
- Students will sit staggered and 3 feet apart.
- Students will be allowed to talk during lunch. (Please note that we always begin lunch with 5 minutes of silence to get students to start eating their lunches.)
- If your child orders a school lunch, it will be delivered to them at the lunch table. At this time, students will not be walking through the lunch line.
- Students will sanitize their hands before eating, as they do when in the classroom.
- Due to the fact that social distancing is still one of our mitigations, we will develop a schedule of when classrooms eat in the cafeteria.
- As district mitigations change, we will revise our systems accordingly.
All systems for ordering breakfast and lunch will remain the same.
We will continue to be a peanut and nut free school to ensure the safety of all our students.
