7th & 8th Grade Reading
I can read accurately and smoothly when reading out loud.
I can read out loud with a loud, clear voice so others can easily follow along.
7th and 8th grade Reading students are currently working on their reading fluency by reading scripts out loud and acting out Reader's Theater plays such as The Legend of Robin Hood.
Foundational Reading
I can describe the purpose of an infographic.
I can describe the purpose of text features that may be included in an infographic.

7th Grade Reading
I can identify and analyze figurative language in poetry (alliteration, allusion, simile, metaphor).
I can use prompts to think deeply about a text as I read and re-read.
I can ask and answer questions as I am reading.
In reading class, students have been reading many different examples of poems from authors such as Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, Langston Hughes, Jason Reynolds, Kwame Alexander, and Nikki Grimes. We have been practicing identifying figurative language and slowing down as we are reading it to consider what the author makes us see, think, or hear. We will continue this work next week.
8th Grade Reading
I can ask and answer questions as I am reading.
I can use evidence to support my opinion in an oral debate.
I can add detail to my writing to explain my thinking.
In reading class, students have been reading and rereading informational text to form an opinion about whether or not athletes deserve to earn multi million dollar salaries. This week, we used debate stems to have an oral debate in class. We also took a preassessment to get ready for our next unit on memoirs and telling our own stories.
Foundational Reading
I can add inflectional endings (-es, -ed, -ing) to base words and read them with accuracy.
I can differentiate between open and closed syllables and read them with accuracy.
I can add and delete final phonemes that I hear in a word.
I can identify the conflicts that a character is facing as I am reading a book.
Students have been reading and writing short texts to continue developing their word knowledge. We have been using the wordless graphic novel The Arrival by Shaun Tan to write sentences with the patterns we are learning in class. We have also been using the book to have conversations about how authors develop stories through the character, the setting, and the conflict. We will continue this work next week!

6th Grade Reading
Sixth graders are reading about natural disasters. They are learning different types of questions to improve their memory and understanding while reading. They continue to work on fluency, morphology, and word work.
7th Grade Reading
Seventh graders are learning about Figurative Language. They are learning simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, oxymoron, idiom, and hyperbole. They are reading poetry and identifying the different types of figurative language and why authors use them. Seventh graders are continuing to work on fluency, morphology, and word work.
8th Grade Reading
Eighth graders are reading about natural disasters. They are learning different types of questions to improve their memory and understanding while reading. They continue to work on fluency, morphology, and word work.
