Naturalization Process
How to become a U.S. Citizen
Who is Eligible?
1.At least eighteen years old.
2.A lawful permanent resident of the United States.
3.Resident and physically present in the United States for at least five years at the time of application.
4.Of good moral character.
Complete Application
1.Complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.
2.Get two photographs of yourself that meet immigration service requirements (pose, size, lighting, etc.).
3.Collect the necessary documents.
4.Send your application, documents and fee ($320 application fee/$70 biometric fee for fingerprinting as of August 2004) to the appropriate Service Center.
Getting Fingerprinted
1.Receive an appointment letter from the USCIS.
2.Go to the fingerprint location.
3.Get your fingerprints taken.
4.Mail additional documents if requested.
Being Interviewed and Tested
1.Receive an appointment for your interview.
2.Go to your local office at the specified time.
3.Bring identification.
4.Answer questions about your application and your background.
5.Take the English and civics tests.
6.Receive a decision.
Taking Oath of Allegiance
1.Receive a ceremony date.
2.Check in at the ceremony.
3.Return your Permanent Resident Card.
4.Answer questions about what you have been doing since your interview.
5.Take the oath of allegiance.
