East Wilkes Middle School

Guest Speaker: Reu Thomas

Students at East Wilkes Middle School participated in a Steampunk themed enhancement period. The students created Steampunk hats, bicycles, and wrote stories that supported their creations.


The 8th Grade Career Thematic Unit is a three day unit set in during the Industrial Revolution. Over two days students rotate through eight career sessions. Sessions include range from horticulture to crime scene investigation, and crafts.

Here are a few of the planned activities...

Green Steam: Curses! Foiled again! Mad scientists trying to control the world’s food supply through the use of an increasingly powerful set of weather machines.

Clockwork Worlds: An interactive game in which cities buy, sell and trade with each other to make the most of their resources and fill deficits.

Elementary My Dear Watson: Students will investigate a crime scene with the technology available to Sherlock Holmes. Crime scene analysis, questioning of suspects and studying background will allow students to figure out “Who Dunit.”

Automatons and Mechanical Whatnots: After a brief video introduction, students will use Legos, tinker toys, Lincoln logs and other building materials to construct an automaton or machine.

Heißluftballon (The Airship): Tissue paper hot air balloons are one of those powerful STEM learning experiences that lend themselves so well to being cross-curricular.

The Outsiders

The 8th grade faculty at NWMS are in the process of STEAMPUNKING “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton to be the cornerstone of their unit. One of the ideas for the unit involves delving into the history of prejudice in America.

Spring, 2016

Biltmore Estate

The 6th grade faculty of West Middle are in the process of creating a spring STEAMPUNK unit around the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC.

In addition to the unit, students will visit Biltmore Estate on April 14, 2016.
