SUMMER 2016
Letter from the President
Summer in Michigan is incredible and I hope you can all hit the pause button at least once to truly enjoy the beach, water, and sun. And… as health educators we do this with sun screen, lots of water to stay hydrated, life jackets, and sun glasses!
GLC SOPHE continues to move forward with its plan of work for 2016.
• The "How-to" Grant Writing workshop in May had 60 attendees and it was an information packed day with national speaker and experienced grant writer, David Bauer. Several participants suggested the need for a “grant writing 102” in the future.
• The Advocacy Committee continues its monthly teleconferences and has made good strides in implementing their strategies for health and policy issues. See Kim’s report on the work of the committee in the newsletter.
• GLC SOPHE has purchased beautiful glass water bottles with our logo. These sustainable, easy to clean bottles will be available for purchase at the fall meeting in Ann Arbor.
• Our Facebook page is being updated on a very regular basis with jobs, articles of interest, and chapter announcements. If you haven’t “liked” us yet please do so at: https://www.facebook.com/GLCSOPHE/
• At our May workshop, our chapter presented three awards to two very deserving individuals and one outstanding organization. Congratulations to Lisa Wegner, Katie Jourdan, and Kent County Health Department. See the announcement for our Distinguished Service award in this newsletter. PLEASE nominate a deserving health educator so we can honor them at the Fall meeting.
Enjoy the Magic of Michigan this summer! I hope to see you all in Ann Arbor this October for our Fall Meeting.

Diabetes Prevention Program at Macomb County Health Department
September 2016 marks one year that Macomb County Health Department (MCHD) will be offering a CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Program. “It has been an amazing opportunity for patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes to work towards a lifestyle change to prevent T2 [type 2 diabetes],” said Kirsten Henry, Diabetes Prevention Program Manager at MCHD.
Participants start the program by attending 16 weekly sessions to learn how to eat healthy without giving up all the foods they love, figure out how to make time for physical activity, manage stress, cope with challenges, and learn how to get back on the healthy track. Participants then enhance their skills by meeting monthly for the next six months to maintain those changes made. The monthly sessions will review key ideas such as tracking food & physical activity, setting goals, staying motivated, and overcoming barriers.
“The program allows for participants to stay in touch with each other during the week. It makes, attempting a change much easier in a group setting and being encouraged to maintain accountability,” said Henry. MCHD has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, and concern for what will happen to participants after the class is complete. MCHD’s team of lifestyle coaches will be providing a resource tool for participants to stay current with community health initiatives and activities to assist in their health journey.
There have been nine trained lifestyle coaches that have implemented four currently running programs. MCHD has featured programs at the Warren Community Center, Advantage Health Center, and ConcertoHealth. These partners were strategically chosen to the target population that aligns with grant funding requirements from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. MCHD’s goal is to bring awareness about type 2 diabetes to those most at risk, even if it is one person at a time.

SOPHE Advocacy
Want to participate in advocacy? There are many ways to do it! One way is to participate in the SOPHE Advocacy Action alerts. It is a great opportunity to support an issue with SOPHE and to see examples of advocacy. Many times the action alerts are a form of lobbying because it is directly linked to a piece of legislation. Check them out at the following link: http://www.congressweb.com/sophe/
There are many webinars available on the SOPHE website. Below are webinars that are aligned with GLC-SOPHE Advocacy topics. They provide valuable background information on the topics and also an opportunity for CHES credits.

Planning Survey
The Advocacy Planning Committee is up and running. We need your input. Please take the survey to provide direction to the advocacy committee. It is a quick, 6 question survey to guide our topic selection and to determine interest in a legislative day at the Capitol in Lansing this fall. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey by August 15, 2016.
