Player News!

Hello Families,

Welcome to October! Now that students have been in school for six weeks, they are really showing signs of understanding classroom routines and rules. It is so fun to watch as students walk in crooked lines through the halls or run to line up from the playground when the they hear the bell. All of these things show they are picking up those rules and routines and following those procedures set up by the teachers.

So far, the weather has been very nice and the children still go outside everyday. It is an opportunity for them to get exercise and have fresh air. Teachers encourage students to remove their masks so they can take a break from wearing them. They also provide the students with an additional mask break at another point in the day when the children are safely distanced at 6 feet or more and they can also remove them when they are having snack. Most of the children really are doing a great job of keeping their masks on for the remainder of their day.

Zoos Are Us

We are very excited to tell you about an upcoming event we have planned for Friday, October 8th. On this day, we will be visited by a company called Zoos Are Us. They will bring a traveling zoo with a variety of animals for the children to see, pet, and learn about. Some of the animals include goats, sheep, a little cow, a donkey, a llama, a bunny and chickens. We will set up a mini farm in the playground area, fully decorated with pumpkins, bales of straw, and corn stalks. Classrooms will be assigned a time frame to visit our "mini farm" and each student will receive a small pumpkin to decorate and bring home.

Note: On this day, there will be a huge tractor trailer in the back parking lot that may obstruct traffic somewhat. Please be extra patient and extra careful when parking and exiting the lot.

Monday, October 11th Holiday- No School

Reminder that on Monday, October 11th, all District 109 schools will be closed in observance of the Columbus Day Holiday.

Getting to Know You

If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to fill out the form below to provide us with a little more information about your child. It will also ask about other adults who are allowed to pick up your child. We will not dismiss your child to anyone who you have not indicated as an alternative pick up person besides a parent. You will also have an opportunity to submit any questions you might need to know prior to our orientation days.

Note: If you already filled this out from the previous time I sent it out or from our website, you will not need to do it again.

October Snack Menu

As mentioned last month, we are still having some difficulty getting all of our snack items as ordered due to a worker strike with one of our vendors. We are doing everything we can to keep the menu as close as planned. Thank you for understanding.

Safety First: A Message from Corporal Anthony DeBella

As you know, we are continuously concerned with safety in everything we do and that includes everything you all do when on school property. Once a week, we are visited by Justice Police Corporal Anthony DeBella. Corporal DeBella comes to Player School to visit with the children, as well as, to observe some of our procedures. Yesterday he presented me with a list of items to address with all of you. Here are the items he is concerned with:

  • Adults driving through the school zone and parking lot while using their phones. This is very dangerous to ALL of us as the driver can easily be distracted. We do not want anything to happen to a child, a staff member, or any of you. It is also against the law to use a phone while driving in any school zone, so PLEASE put your phones down while driving through the lot!!
  • Adults driving with students standing in the car, sitting in the front seat of the vehicle, or not buckled in a car seat. I know he has spoken to some of you, but asked me to let you know that it is unlawful to have unsecured children in a moving vehicle. Children under the age of 13 should not be seated in the front seat.
  • Adults rushing to leave the parking lot while parents and children are walking to their cars. Children are very unpredictable and can dart away from an adult. Please be more patient and leave the lot in an orderly way. (I must say that on most days, things are moving very smoothly from the back parking lot where I supervise each day. I really appreciate all of the cooperation and courtesy that I see with most drivers!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!)
  • When entering the parking lot for drop off, we realize that the lines of cars can be quite long from both directions. Please be courteous and take turns entering into the lot to avoid any risk of accidents.

I will keep you posted of any other items that Corporal DeBella points out as unsafe or unlawful. Thank you for your cooperation!

Player School T-Shirts Coming!

Player School T-shirts have been ordered for all students. Typically, we use these shirts for field trips, fun days, school spirit days, or other events. This year, we are not cleared for field trips yet, but we will certainly have other opportunities for the children to wear them. If they arrive before next Friday, we can all wear them for our mini zoo day!

The funds for these shirts come from our fundraising budget so there is no cost to you to receive them.

Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Back by popular demand, Player School will host a cookie dough fundraiser this year. Details for this will be coming home soon. We hope to start it by the end of October and have delivery of items by mid-December. Just in time for Holiday Baking!!

Player School Social Worker

Ms. Natalie Nudera, our Player School Social Worker, has been visiting in and out of each classroom, getting to know students and making good relationships with some children. Her role will shortly become more structured and she will begin working with groups of students or individual students to help them work through some of their problem solving, identifying and managing their emotions, and other skills, including turn-taking, impulse control, or attending to a teacher. Recently, she sent out a letter to parents explaining her role here at Player School.

Here is a link to that letter that was sent home recently. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
