Life in the library...

The library has had a steady stream of visitors so far this year! However, I understand it is easy to not really know what happens here on a day-to-day basis. Hopefully these pictures, graph, and text will give a glimpse into life in the library.

Students read...

Even with each student having his or her own laptop and more and more students using ereaders, students at HHS still check out books, although at a lower volume than last year during this same time period. The chart below illustrates the number of total checkouts as well as number of checkouts in various categories between the two years.

Two different classes have been to the library to check out fiction books during this nine week period. Mr. Graber's Modern US History classes came to the library to check out fiction books related to westward expansion. Mrs. Becker's Biology classes also came to the library to check out fiction books. In addition, many students checked out fiction books to be prepared for seminar on Mondays and Wednesdays.
To aid students in finding good books to read, 43 new fiction and nonfiction books were purchased this quarter. Some of the titles are pictured below.

Students research...

Several classes have come to the library to learn about the online databases offered through the State Library of Kansas. Mrs. Schroeder brought her photography students to begin their research about famous photographers and Mr. Marinelli brought his American Government students when they were researching legislative bills.

What's next?

I have several ideas floating around in my head of ways students can be encouraged to use the library even more. Some of the questions I've been thinking about include:

~Why is circulation down this year as compared to the same time period last year? Would students at the HS participate in a reading challenge of some sort? How can I encourage an increase in reading among students and staff?

~Would there be interest in a "Library Advisory Board" or other student leadership group in the library? How can I encourage student input and guidance in decisions that are made?

~How can I help the library to become a relevant space for students that includes more than just a quiet "hang out" spot?

~How can I continue to develop relationships with HS teachers so they can become aware of and use the resources available in the library?

~How can I create a more user-friendly online space for the library for students and staff to use during or outside of the school day?

In my first few months in the HHS library, it has been clear to me that the library program has been strong and supported in the past. My personal challenge is to keep the program strong and to continue to find ways to make it relevant for the future.
