Weekly Coaching Tips from Bray
Do your know ALL of your students equally well?
Maybe you know the highest achievers in your class because they share out the most.
Maybe you know those with behavioral challenges because they require more of your attention.
What about the other students? What about the student who averages a B or C in class, never misbehaves, and sporadically shares in class?
Why is this important? Please watch the video below.
Now What?
CHALLENGE
Step 1
Monday morning, print your 1st period roster.
Step 2
Every time you CAN answer the following questions about an individual student, mark a tally by their name.
1. Do you know this student by name and face?
2. Do you know (without looking) how they fare in your classroom?
3. Do you know if this student has siblings and their sibling(s) names?
4. Do you know if this student is involved in any extracurricular activities on or off campus?
5. Have you ever attended #4 or spent time looking at pictures that the student showed you of #4?
6. Do you know something about their home life?
7. Do you know one or more like or dislike not associated with school?
Step 3
Look at your tally marks. Pick 1-3 students who have the fewest marks.
Step 4
Tuesday through Friday make it a point to engage the chosen student(s) in conversations that help you get to know them better.
Step 5
The following Monday, start with your next period roster.
In 5-6 weeks time, you will have connected with 6-18 students and helped to grow the learning environment in your room.
