The Principal's Den
- Team leaders will be joining for a retreat in May. I want us to look over the calendar and begin planning Fine Arts program dates, curriculum nights, Open House, etc.
- 2nd & 3rd grade teachers will all be attending ELM training this summer & implementing more project based learning in the fall.
- 2nd grade teachers will be attending Letterland training this spring and also implementing this into their ELA schedule.
- I am working on a schedule for next year that will allow every grade level to have an extra hour of planning every week. This time will be used for a variety of things - data analysis/TEKS deconstruction, time with Learning Coaches, and/or team planning.
- The district plans to focus on problem solving strategies next year in math, i.e. UPS. SVES will be looking into the same focus.
- I am looking into organizing a book study in Math. The name of the book is Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All. Ashlee Smith worked with a couple of our teachers this year on this book. She is interested in helping to lead this next year as long as our schedule doesn't change with her.
- We will continue to use DRA for our benchmarking next year. Kinder is the only grade level so far that wants to keep using Reading A-Z. We will need to make final decisions on using RAZ kids.
- Tracking the progress of our kids will continue. Remember, we are working towards having students keep track of data in their student data folders.
- We will be continuing our journey with PBIS. The committee will be meeting soon to discuss what our next steps will be. Many teachers have also expressed an interest in having classroom meetings. I am considering another book study or some kind of staff development for social and emotional learning (SEL).
- There is lots of talk across the district about self-contained vs. departmentalization. Each campus has the option to be either at every grade level. At SVES, we will not be departmentalized at any grade level right now. We do have the ability to form flexible groups based on student need. If your team has ideas about this, please do not hesitate to share your thoughts.
5th grade News
I wanted to take a moment to share some news about our 5th grade team. Mrs. Debi Klyn has been our long-term substitute for Science/Social Studies class for the last several weeks. As much as we hate to see her go, the rules and regulations per the Texas Education Agency limits the number of days she can serve as a long term substitute. These rules vary for every retired teacher. We made every attempt to find a way to have her stay but unfortunately, as of Thursday, she has reached the total number days she can serve. We will miss Mrs. Klyn dearly! She will be able to be in the classroom with her homeroom class on the day of the Science STAAR test.
