Weekly Newsletter

From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
I hope all of you found some quality time over the Lunar New Year holiday to rest and recharge among family and friends.
Our students continue to amaze me with their enthusiasm and sincere desire to grow and improve. Not a day goes by where this isn't evident. It's a great joy to be a part of it, and I'm sure all of our Middle School teachers feel the same.
I want to thank all the middle school parents who participated in our Parent Information Session last Thursday. In case you missed it, the session was a simple review of our reasons for using NWEA MAP testing to measure student progress and guide instructional choices throughout the school year.
Many students will be finishing up their MAP tests next week, and we hope to send home results the week of February 3rd. If you would like more information on MAP testing I encourage you to contact your child's English or Math teacher. They will be happy to sit down with you and share more detailed information about your child's growth.
새해 복 많이 받으세요!

Fun math puzzles!
Logic puzzles are a fun way for children to strengthen their math and critical thinking skills. While the puzzle may seem too difficult at first, encouraging your child to keep trying. Feel free to work with them or get other family members involved.
Children who keep trying despite setbacks strengthen their resilience and to learn ways to cope when there are difficulties. I think this puzzle is a great one because the only math skill needed is multiplication which all middle schools are familiar with; however, the skill of patience is something in which we all have room to grow.
In this puzzle, each letter represents a different number. Work through the puzzle to discover how a CAT times a CAT could possibly equal a BOBCAT! The answer will appear at the bottom of the newsletter! Have fun!

Creating Lasting Bonds in Physical Science
This week in 8th Grade Physical Science we studied the structure of atoms and how they combine in specific ways to form molecules.
Students used molecular ball and stick model kits to build common organic molecules found in our everyday lives. Students got firsthand experience examining the geometry that manifests as the electrons of bonding atoms interact and link to one another.
As the week of MAP testing progressed this lab was a hands-on break that allowed students to collaborate. Throughout the activity, students did an excellent job of overcoming challenges, solving problems, and creating lasting bonds with one another.
