A Year of Change for the West Clermont School District
There are many changes taking place in the West Clermont School District as we work to make sure we are serving our students in the best way possible. One of the biggest changes we recently implemented involved redrawing the district’s elementary school attendance boundaries, which allows us to accommodate our current enrollment as well as our projected future growth.
“We have spent time over the last several months planning events and special activities to make sure we end the school year well and transition smoothly into the 2019-20 school year,” said Natasha Adams, superintendent. “We also want to help establish a new school building culture, traditions and sense of ownership for all because we know how important a sense of place and belonging is to everyone who enters our doors.”
Another change that resulted from the redrawing of the elementary attendance boundaries is a consolidation of the district’s preschool programming. Beginning in the 2019-20 school year, West Clermont Wolf Pup Preschool will be housed at both Holly Hill Elementary School and Willowville Elementary School.
“Relocating our Head Start and preschool programming to two locations allows us to maximize our resources and become more efficient so we can continue to deliver a high-quality pre-kindergarten program that provides an engaging and developmentally appropriate environment and learning experiences for students to prepare them for kindergarten,” said Stacie McMahon, district preschool supervisor.
The district focused on key considerations throughout the process of redrawing the boundaries, including how to achieve the best balance of elementary students district-wide, successfully transition everyone, minimally impact families, and create opportunities for the long-term growth and sustainability of the district.
“We want to focus on being one district, not a district of schools, and I believe through the redrawing of our elementary school boundaries we are one step closer to achieving this goal,” continued Adams. “We are fortunate to have committed administrators, teachers and staff who care for and will help usher all of our students and families through this process.”
In Loving Memory of Mrs. Denise Smith
Denise Smith, who served on the West Clermont School District Board of Education,
recently passed away after a battle with breast cancer.
“We all are saddened by the passing of Denise, who was a longtime board member and an advocate for and friend of our school district community,” said Natasha Adams, district superintendent. “Her leadership, dedication and contributions to our community have positively impacted countless lives and will be felt for generations to come.”
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Smith and her husband Patrick have been members of the West Clermont community for 38 years. Both of their children, Justin and Amanda attended West Clermont Schools and graduated from Glen Este High School. First elected in 2010, Smith served a total of eight years on the West Clermont Board of Education. She also served on the board of the West Clermont Education Foundation.
Smith also served as an educator for the past 40 years, most recently working as a Speech Language Pathologist for the Clermont County Educational Service Center and Bethel School District. She was a member of several professional organizations and committees and volunteered extensively in the West Clermont School District and the community for many years, including on the board of the Clermont County League of Women Voters as well as for the Clermont County Workforce Readiness Initiative. In 2014 Smith received the Orpha Gatch Suffragist Award for Leadership and Volunteerism. Smith always felt that her experiences as an educator, volunteer and parent gave her the necessary insight and knowledge to be a productive and effective board member.
“She was a passionate advocate for the children of West Clermont and always kept them first in her mind,” continued Adams. “That is her legacy.”
A public visitation is scheduled for Thursday May 23rd at Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday May 24th at St. Veronica.
