Reading Workshop
Last week the Maples worked on building up their skills for reading bigger and more complex words. We practiced zooming in on the beginning sounds and looking at pairs of consonants to blend together to help make sense of the words. Maples also worked on helping their partners become better readers by helping them decode words and blends.
Try It At Home:
- When reading with your child or around any text that starts with a pair of consonants cover up the end of the word and let your child sound out the beginning blend and guess what the whole word is.
- ABCya has a fun, simple consonant blend game that gives kids the chance to hear a blend and several endings. The player then picks which ending best matches the blend. You can find it here.
Writing Workshop
This week in Writing Workshop the Maples continued working on how-to books. Some students revised their first how-to book from last week while others began new how-to books. In both cases the growing writers acted out the steps to make sure they made sense and listened to the suggestions of their writing partners to make their books even better.
Math Workshop
This week the Maples used the Question of the Day to share problem solving strategies. Maples continued the Build a Block, Build a Wall unit by reviewing 3D objects. Students also showed what they have learned by composing and decomposing 3D shapes.
Integrated Unit - Why Do We Garden?
This week the Maples had many opportunities to explore and investigate gardens both in the classroom and outside. During work-time students used magnifying glasses to take a close look at specimens of plants found in the garden. They made diagrams and observations in their research journals. On Tuesday and Friday Maples took mini-field trips to the community garden at Ft. Greene. There Maples documented their observations with cameras and made note of living and non-living things that are used in the garden.
