Weekly Warrior Update
Student Focused-World Class
Word for the Warriors...
Hello Warrior Family,
Welcome Back to School! The start of the school-year is SUCH an exciting time! The JSMS staff is ready and eager to welcome students back to school tomorrow!
Middle School is an incredible time of growth for students! We work hard at Sevier to support every aspect of a child's development! Everyone at JSMS is focused on developing positive relationships with our students because we know that these relationships are the foundation of all we do both in the classroom and out of the classroom! Students will without a doubt grow academically while at Sevier. Our teachers are committed to challenging and supporting students at all levels in the classroom! In addition, there are opportunities for students before and after school that provide time for re-teaching, academic support and also enrichment. Social Development is an important aspect of school-life at Sevier. Especially during the middle school years, it is important that we continue supporting positive self-esteem and social relationships as students grow and develop. Students are supported by teachers and counselors in weekly class meetings to support pro-social behaviors among our students. Additionally, there are a multitude of extra-curricular activities and athletics in which students may become involved. We encourage ALL students to choose at least ONE extra-curricular activity to join in order to become involved in school-life. Students do not have to have had prior experience with any of our extra-curricular or athletic activities to join!
This Weekly Warrior Update will be sent each week. The purpose of this memo is to keep you informed and updated regarding school life at Sevier. If there is ever any information that you feel is pertinent that should be included in our weekly memo, please feel free to pass along that information to our school office or to me personally! Each week, teachers, coaches and extra-curricular sponsors are asked to submit information and recognitions regarding their group for submission to the Weekly Warrior Update. I will also work to include any information that will include the entire school student population as well to keep you informed.
Each week, a listing of school events will be provided. It is entitled, Week of the Warrior. All teachers, sponsors and coaches are asked to submit meeting times to this segment of our memo.
In addition, there will be a section included each week known as the JSMS JAM. This section of the memo will include school and system-wide information that may be important to the student population as a whole, or particular groups of students.
We also include a section entitled The Warrior Whoop. This section serves to celebrate and recognize both the students, parents and staff of JSMS. There are many activities and opportunities that exist for students here at John Sevier Middle School and we work hard to include all information and recognitions pertaining to those each week. Obviously, there are different seasons of the year when our extra-curricular groups and athletic groups are active. During those times, this memo may include more information concerning one group over another; however, that does NOT mean that any one activity, experience or opportunity is more important or valued than another. It simply means that a certain area may be having more events during that time of year that may require more information be delivered or more of an opportunity for students to be recognized than another. For events that happen less frequently, we make attempts to provide coverage that is more extensive when those events occur (example: concerts, plays, academic competitions that may not occur year round, etc.). We value ALL of our students and ALL of our activities and this memo is designed to keep you informed about all of those activities and to recognize all students who participate in those events as they happen.
We welcome any and all information and pictures of and about our students that you would like to provide for us and would love to include those in our Weekly Warrior Update. We are a Warrior Family and this is OUR Weekly Warrior Update!
It is our desire to have an open and two-way communication system here at Sevier. We want to make sure that we are supporting your students well. If at any point during the school-year, you have questions or would like more information, please email us or give us a call. We are happy to meet with you at any time. We know that students who have involved families perform better in school. We also know that schools who have involved and engaged families are more successful! We value your partnership in supporting all students and are eager to build relationships with all of our families as we begin this new school-year.
Proud to be a Warrior,

CANVAS PARENT APP
Kingsport City Schools has implemented Canvas as our learning management system. Teachers have most, if not all their coursework in Canvas. To view your student's grades in Canvas you will need to download the Canvas Parent App.
Canvas Parent enhances the potential for parents to engage in their children's education. Parents can review upcoming or past assignments, check on grades, and receive course announcements.
Canvas Parent can be used by anyone who creates an account, has been added to Canvas with an observer role, or has signed up as a parent using the web browser.
Access to Canvas Parent is managed by the student's institution.
Parents can use the Canvas Parent app on all iOS and Android devices. View the Canvas Parent Android Guide and the Canvas Parent iOS Guide.
View Student Courses and Grades
The Courses tab displays the list of courses where their students are enrolled. For each course, parents can see course grades, the syllabus, and assignments and events. Grades display according to the course grading scheme.
View Student Assignments and Events
Assignments and events can be viewed by course or week. Parents can set reminders for a specific assignment or event, which are sent to mobile devices as push notifications.
Set Alerts for Student Activity
The app settings allow parents to set alerts for specific assignment and grade activity. Alerts are displayed in the Alerts page in the app.

CAR RIDERS AND BUS RIDERS
Car Riders:
Students may be dropped of at Sevier in the mornings beginning at 7:00 am. Students arriving after 7:45 am will be counted tardy.
Please follow the traffic pattern and drop off your child on Wateree St. in front of the building. Please do not drop your child off in our parking lot. Doing so, is very dangerous. Please follow the car line and drop your child off on Wateree St. at the front entrance of the school.
- Dismissal is at 2:45 pm. Please make sure that your child knows where your car will be picking them up (whether in the car line or parked around campus).
- All car riders who have not been picked up by 3:00 will be asked to wait inside the building in the front foyer of the school. This is for their safety. Please do not ask your child to wait after 3:00 in a location other than the front of JSMS. Administrators will ensure that all students are inside in the front foyer at 3:00 or after. Again, this is for their safety.
Bus Riders:
For all bus information, please contact transportation at 392-4416. Transportation will be able to give you important information regarding your students’ bus number, pick up time, drop off time, etc.
Please make sure that your child knows their bus number. The buses leave JSMS in the afternoon at approximately 2:58. Therefore, it is critical that students know which bus to board so that they do not miss the bus.
