DCSD Extended School Day
In order to recapture precious instructional time lost due to Hurricane Irma, the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by 20 minutes, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, through the end of the first semester on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017.
DCSD schools and offices will also remain open on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 7) as the district ensures that students don’t miss out on lessons vital to their academic achievement.
The decision to extend the school day was a collaborative effort across all DCSD divisions. In addition, Dr. Green is empowered to make “scheduling changes to the school day because of inclement weather or other emergency conditions.” A primary goal was not to impact Fall Break or Winter Break for both families and employees who may have commitments based on the approved school year calendar. Also, with the unpredictability of North Georgia weather in the winter, the district does not want to use all its inclement weather days before the onset of that season.
DHHS Debate Updates
The Druid Hills debate team attended its first debate tournament of the year on Saturday.
Senior Patrick Welter won a best speaker award, placing 13th out of 38 speakers in the advanced division.
Freshman William Wainwright won 10th best speaker out of 82 speakers in the novice division and his team won 7th place out of 41 teams competing.

AFAEE Program
Please review the attached flyer regarding the Atlanta Families' Awards for Excellence in Education (AFAEE) program. The DeKalb County School District was honored to have one award winner last year who was celebrated at the AFAEE awards ceremony on May 3, 2017, and our very own Ms. Staines was recognized during the 2014-15 school year!
Please consider nominating our teachers and administrators who are doing a phenomenal job every day for our children. Recipients earn a $7,500 award, the $7,500 includes funding for a school project of their choice ($3,500), funding for a professional development opportunity ($1,500), and a personal stipend ($2,500).
Nominations can be submitted online through September 30, 2017 for teachers and school administrators in our district. To learn more about the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education program and to submit nominations, please visit http://atlfamiliesawards.org/
