College for Kids summer program returns to Aims Community College in June
Registration opens 8 a.m. March 27
College for Kids (C4K) is a summer program at Aims Community College in Northern Colorado that provides a unique, educational and fun experience for students ages 9 to 15, by providing an opportunity to "go to college." The program also offers a novel opportunity for all participating 13 to 15-year-old students to gain leadership skills as junior assistants within their chosen classes.
Students participate in classes of their choice and engage in a variety of topics. Program offerings are intended to introduce kids to possible careers and start getting them to think about what opportunities they may want to pursue in the future. All classes are designed to be fun, captivating and hands-on.
Each campus location (Loveland, Windsor, Fort Lupton, and Greeley) hosts one four day session throughout the month of June.
Registration
Registration for College for Kids 2023 will open March 27 and run until May 15. Registration for all campuses will be available through the online portal here. There you will see descriptions of the upcoming sessions as well as registration instructions.
If you have questions regarding registration or would like to know more about the C4K summer program, please email us at collegeforkids@aims.edu or call (970) 339-6609.
College for Kids Leaders Program
The Leaders Program is designed for 13 to 15-year-old students who like to take charge. You will take part in the classroom as well as hold the role of a Junior Assistant to the Instructors.
For this program, there is a separate, REQUIRED Leadership class that will take place the Friday prior to the week of the program you are attending. To sign up for this course, select your preferred location among the “Leaders” options using the registration link (available spring 2023).
Cost
For Loveland, Windsor and Greeley, the cost of tuition is $75 for the full four days and includes a morning and afternoon class, as well as two snacks and lunch. Thanks to the the generosity of an anonymous donor, the cost for the Fort Lupton program is $25 for the full four days, which includes both morning and afternoon class as well as two snacks and lunch.
*If you are a Larimer County resident and your student attends a Title I school or is a participant in a foster care program and you need financial assistance, please contact Morgan Thompson (C4K Program Coordinator) at collegeforkids@aims.edu.

State Assessments Provide Helpful Information to Parents and Teachers
State Assessments Provide Helpful Information to Parents and Teachers Test results provide helpful information to parents and teachers to better instruct students and help them succeed. Taking state assessments can provide evidence that students are learning effectively and mastering the state learning standards – the knowledge and skills they need to know and be able to do based on grade level expectations. #TaketheTest #StateAssessment #StandardizedTests #OnlineSchools#CyberSchool http://ow.ly/gt9O50N3Qq5 📝👨🎓👍
Don’t Stress About the Test:
Help Your Student Relax and Be Ready to Show What They Know and What They Can Do Practice multiple-choice questions to get your student used to the types of questions they’ll face. The more experience, the better they’ll do on the test. Don’t just practice, give some guidelines on how to best approach multiple choice questions. Encourage them to be thoughtful as they read through the question and think about a potential answer before relying on the multiple-choice options, which helps develop their critical-thinking skills. Once they have the answer choices in front of them, teach them how to use the process of elimination to narrow down their choices. Make sure to throw in some answer choices that still pop up on the tests such as “all of the above” or “none of the above” to help you student understand these choices exist and could appear on the test, avoiding surprises on testing day. March Celebrations Around the World
Women History Month - Laverne Cox
Laverne Cox is an Emmy-nominated actress and producer, speaker, and activist for transgender rights. She has studied dance since the age of eight and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance.
While at university, she began to act in plays put on by the theater department and soon after branched out to off-Broadway plays and independent films. It was also during this time that she went from being gender-nonconforming to being more and more femme.
She got her big break portraying Sophia Burset, a transgender woman, in the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black. She played this role from 2013 to 2019, becoming the first transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2014. That same year, she was the first transgender person to appear on the cover of TIME magazine.
In addition to being an actress, she also has her own production company and speaks around the country about and in support of LGBT issues.
Ramadan
Ramadan commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and begins with the sighting of the crescent moon after a new moon. It’s observed with a month of fasting, giving alms, prayers, reading the Quran, abstaining from bad deeds, and staying humble.
Muslims fast during Ramadan between sunrise and sunset. Sunrise is considered the time when the sun’s first light may be seen on the horizon, when the white cord may be distinguished from the black cord. Each day a special effort is made to say the five daily prayers. It’s believed this heightens spirituality and develops self-control. The fast is broken at sunset with Iftar, the evening meal, and a prayer. Fasting is mandatory for every Muslim who is sane, adult, able, and resident.
Saint Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. St. Patrick’s Day 2023 will take place on Friday, March 17. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman controlled Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at sixteen. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.
Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world in locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore. Popular St. Patrick’s Day recipes include Irish soda bread, corned beef and cabbage. In the United States, people often wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. Mr. Sparks particularly likes this celebration.
In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a spiritual and religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world.
What Do Leprechauns Have to Do With St. Patrick's Day?
One icon of the Irish holiday is the Leprechaun. The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies.
The Chicago River Dyed Green
As Irish immigrants spread out over the United States, other cities developed their own traditions. One of these is Chicago’s annual dyeing of the Chicago River green. The practice started in 1962, when city pollution-control workers used dyes to trace illegal sewage discharges and realized that the green dye might provide a unique way to celebrate the holiday. That year, they released 100 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river–enough to keep it green for a week. Today, in order to minimize environmental damage, only 40 pounds of dye are used, and the river turns green for only several hours.
Although Chicago historians claim their city’s idea for a river of green was original, some natives of Savannah, Georgia (whose St. Patrick’s Day parade, the oldest in the nation, dates back to 1813) believe the idea originated in their town. They point out that, in 1961, a hotel restaurant manager named Tom Woolley convinced city officials to dye Savannah’s river green. The experiment didn’t exactly work as planned, and the water only took on a slight greenish hue. Savannah never attempted to dye its river again, but Woolley maintains (though others refute the claim) that he personally suggested the idea to Chicago’s Mayor Richard J. Daley.

2023-24 OPEN ENROLLMENT IS NOW UNDERWAY FOR ALL SCHOOLS
Beginning Tuesday, November 1, Greeley-Evans School District 6 will accept applications for students who want to attend a school that is outside their boundary area.
Any parent or guardian interested in enrolling their child in a school outside their home boundary for the 2023-2024 school year must apply during the open enrollment period, which is November 1, 2022, through December 15, 2022. While District 6 is able to accommodate most open enrollment requests, it may not be able to approve requests for enrollment into schools, specific grade levels or special programs that are at or above capacity or cannot fulfill the specific needs of the student.
Parents will be notified via email of their student(s) open enrollment status prior to February 1, 2023. Parents have until February 28, 2023 to accept or deny an offer.
Students currently open-enrolled are eligible to stay at their current school through the highest grade offered at that school and do not need to apply yearly. Also, students approved for open enrollment to a school outside their home boundary, regardless of programming needs, will generally not be provided District 6 transportation services. Those open enrolling to the Tointon Academy of Pre-Engineering from outside the boundary may be eligible for transportation services. Anyone living outside Greeley-Evans School District 6 may open enroll into a District 6 school, but will not be eligible for district transportation.
