Cross-curricular Cougars!
Dear Cougar Family,
This weekend was another incredibly successful one for CSHS students, drawing accolades and awards in numerous realms, including athletics, debate, fine arts, meats judging and culinary. Sometimes I sit back, and I am in awe of what our students can accomplish under the amazing guidance of our teachers, and I am thankful that we have an extracurricular activity or club that suits pretty much every interest a student can have. It then just becomes a matter of making sure our students are plugged into the right program.
Getting our Cougars connected is a key part of their success, and this connection comes in many forms. In the classroom it starts by building relationships, and when we can connect lessons to students interests or learning taking place in other classes, the likelihood of students retaining and applying what they learn increases exponentially.
Sheridan Clinkscales, Jessica Kouba, and Jessica Norton are exploring this concept and seeking to increase these powerful cross-curricular connections at CSHS for their risk-taking opportunity as part of the CSISD Teacher Leadership Academy. Please take a moment to watch their video below (this week's 60 Second Staff Development) and consider joining the Cross-curricular Cougars, teachers who are working on planning cross-curricular lessons to increase student learning.
After speaking with them and hearing their passion for their project, I sought out resources on the topic, and found this article: Deeper Learning: Why Cross-curricular Teaching is Essential by Ben Johnson
In the article, Johnson expounds, "Without belaboring the point that teacher isolation has to end, unless teachers stop departmentalizing their teaching and start teaching knowledge in context of other knowledge, student learning will continue to be stuck at the dam. It is time for teachers to collaborate."
We are exceptional at connecting and supporting one another in activities outside of the classroom. Now, let's take it to the next level and seek opportunities to collaborate with teachers from other subject areas.
May this week be an exceptional one full of new connections!
As always, COUGAR PRIDE!
