Merrell's Message
Dear HAWK Families,
At Hazel Grove, we work to empower students to feel confident in themselves. Daily we strive to help them become more independent. Here are a few tips for growing independence in our Hawks:
1. Don’t do for kids what they can do for themselves
2. Maintain a decision-rich environment and allow them to make choices
3. Focus on a child's contributions to the family
4. Encourage effort…and celebrate the learning that comes from failure!
Building independence and confidence has a great side effect . . . .increasing resiliency. Let's help our kids be Hawk Strong!
"You Belong - Hawk Strong"

ART - Yearbook Entries
6th and 5th Graders interested in having artwork featured on the cover of the yearbook need to turn in entries by Wed, April 13th.
Be creative… Show us with your artwork what HGE means to you! All artwork must be on an 8.5x11 sheet of white paper. The design must be vertical and somehow incorporate the words Hazel Grove. Markers, crayons, and pencils please- no paint.
Entries should be turned in to Mrs. Leeper. Make sure your name and teacher’s name is on the back!

April- Vicarious Trauma
Vicarious trauma is a term used to describe a shift in worldview that occurs in helping professionals when they work with clients/students who have experienced trauma.
•Helpers notice that their fundamental beliefs about the world are altered and possibly damaged by being repeatedly exposed to traumatic material.
Compassion fatigue is a preoccupation with absorbing trauma and emotional stresses of others, and this creates a secondary traumatic stress in the helper.
Can be defined as the emotional residue of exposure of working with those suffering from the consequences of traumatic events.
Signs of Vicarious Trauma
Emotional — feeling numb, detached, overwhelmed or hopeless.
Physical — having low energy or feeling fatigued, difficulty falling and/or staying asleep, under-eating/overeating
Behavioral — changing your routine or engaging in self-destructive coping skills- substance abuse.
Professional — experiencing low performance of job tasks and responsibilities; feeling low job morale.
Cognitive — experiencing confusion, diminished concentration, and difficulty with decision making; experiencing trauma imagery, which is seeing events over and over again, persistent thoughts/worries about students
Interpersonal — physically withdrawing or becoming emotionally unavailable to your co-workers, friends, or family.
