Reading and Math
This is the time of year that kindergartners should be passing from yellow to 1G (green) books. To do that, students need to know at least 25 power words, a good share of the consonant sounds and do a cold read. A cold read is an unknown story they read to me. Using picture clues, power words and beginning sounds, students should be able to read the story fairly fluently and tell me what is happening. You can help by practicing, practicing, practicing those power words at home. I am hearing from the kids that many lists are lost, so I will be sending home a list of ALL power words soon. The kindergarten goal is to finish the year in 1G books or higher. We can do this!!
We will finish Unit 3 in math early this month. Unit 4 covers finding 10's in teen numbers, number partners and drawings to represent addition/subtraction situations. Soon we will be doing fluency quick checks on addition/subtraction math facts using numbers no larger than five.
