Am I a mandated reporter as a volunteer?

The answer is Yes.

In Georgia, the law requires certain individuals to report suspected child abuse and neglect. School personnel has always been mandated, as reporters. In July 2012, the law was amended to include almost everyone who comes into contact with children – including volunteers.

What to do:

If you have reasonable doubt that one of our students is being abused, neglected, etc, you should report your concerns to our counselors, who are the school’s designated reporters. If they are not available, you may also report to an administrator.

What not to do:

  • It is not your role to investigate anything the child has told you.

  • Do not discuss your concerns with other parents. (Refer to our Confidentiality Code for Volunteers.)

  • Do not expect to be notified of an outcome after making a report.
