We are making a DT classroom.

Identify the Problem

Nisc will be providing a DT course for next year but the problem i that there is no lab to conduct the class.

Design Brief

Using the 3D design program Google Sketchup, i will design the new DT lab.

End User + Target Audience

The end user will be the Nisc MYP students.

The Target audience will be:

- Architectual firms.

- Hardware Shops.

- Building companies

Design Specs

The product must have:

  • precise, correct and accurate room dimensions based on the existing building structures
  • four emergency exits
  • two main entry points
  • very good ventilation
  • maximum natural light
  • ability to function in the event of a power failure
  • place for washing hands
  • emergency shower
  • eye washing
  • two first aid stations
  • 1 firehouse and 2 fire extinguishers
  • a place for students to store bags, personal items and project that they are working on
  • truck loading bay
  • a display area
  • space for 25 students
  • tools/machinery and materials for for class tasks that include (a) furniture making (wood) (b) toys for kids (wood) (c) producing a letterbox (sheet metal) and (d) key fob making (acrylic)
  • storage place for wood, metal, paint and acrylic
  • tool storage
  • safety equipment and safety equipment storage

Testing Methods

For this product i will be asking 5 people 10 questions in all. 6 of those questions will be about my product however the remaining 4 will be about how i can improve my design.

The people i will be asking to test my product are:

Research and Skill Development

To develop my understanding of CAD and classroom design and layout I used to redesign the current ICT lab. (include your design and explain some design choices) It was really hard at first because i had no idea what i was doing however now i know what i was doing, i had some trouble because it doesnt glitch anymore and im better at it.

To help me unerstand more about the 3D design part of creating my product i created a replica of the Primary cafeteria, which wasn't very good because i didnt get all the exact measurements but maybe it was because the cafeteria was really big. It took me around 3 classes to complete it.

To find a more creative way of creating my deisgn cycle report we went to a website which gave us plenty of websites to choose from, that website was : So we had around 7 different websites to chooses from but in the end by a "hand's up vote" the majority of people chose a fun and creative website called : :

To develop my understanding of design technology labs I conducted some more research and this is what I discovered...

Design Technology is a course offered for both primary and secondary. In some school's in countries such as England DT is a part of their National curriculum meaning it is compulsory that all schools offer that class. Design and Technology is not jut about computers and design, it is a mix between the 2. An example is using Google sketchup to create a 3D design of a house, then once done you create a real life model using the scale one. - -
