Books! Gadgets! Fun!

October is a BUSY month!

The Global Read Aloud starts this month. The Global Cardboard Challenge is Saturday, October 11 at the Lexington Technology Center. We have students in Mrs. Matthews and Ms. Toole's class who are off to a wonderful start with their creations! If you would like to bring your class to the Learning Commons to work on some cardboard creations, let me know and we can schedule a time!

Saturday, October 11 is also Star Wars READS Day! We will be participating for the 3rd year in a row at Learning Express in Lexington (near Target). The first 5 NPES Lions who come to Star Wars READS Day will get a FREE t-shirt! There will also be snacks, story time, and costumed characters!

Makerspace Moments have been a success! Thank you for sending your students! Makerspace Moments are:

Tuesdays 9am - 10am AND 12:30pm-1pm

Wednesdays 12pm - 1pm

In addition to all of the awesome programs happening in the Learning Commons, we are always here to help you and your students with projects and research! Please do not hesitate to let your Learning Commons Team know what you need!

Happy FALL!

Valerie Byrd Fort, Karen Gobbi, Brenda Burkett

Congratulations, Mrs. Gobbi!

Mrs. Gobbi was named the 2014 - 2015 Support Staff Member of the Year! That's AWESOME! Mrs. Gobbi is amazing and our Learning Commons could not run without her! We are so excited! Congrats, Mrs. Gobbi! Thank you for all you do!

Little Free Library

You may have noticed the Little Free Library in the Commons Area! Thank you to Free Times for donating old newspaper boxes so that we could have 2 Little Free Libraries at NPES! One is the Commons Area and we will be installing one outside of the school very soon! A Little Free Library is a place where you can take a book that looks good to you and leave a book that you might like for someone else to read! The books are free and you can just take and read what you like! Enjoy!

After school Make Shop for Teacher's Kids!

Mrs. Burwick and I had a great time at our September Make Shop! We are looking forward to the next one in October! The October After School Make Shop for Teacher's Kids will be on Thursday, October 30, 3pm - 4pm!

As you know, the Learning Commons was fortunate enough to receive a MakerBot 3D PRINTER from Donor's Choose (thank you to Moe's of Lexington, our fantastic PTA, and other generous donors). This Make Shop will focus on creating something with the 3D printer using the online software, Tinkercad (https://www.tinkercad.com/)

This Make Shop will take place in the Computer Lab. It is open to teacher's kids in 2nd - 5th grade. We will need to limit this Make Shop to the first 10 who sign up. Add your name to this Google Doc (link below) to register! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aPK32ScCj2s9msQQAmwTLtIVed91LZELvcrDhyWV8po/edit?usp=sharing

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Makerspace Moments! Spotlight: CARDBOARD!

Makerspace Moments are a time when students can come to the Learning Commons to explore and create. We will continue with our CARDBOARD focus throughout the month of October (in honor of the Global Cardboard Challenge, of course!). There is plenty of cardboard, tape, glue, and other supplies available for students to use when they come to the Makerspace. They can create anything they want! There will be a few examples in place to inspire them, but it is up to them to create something AWESOME! They can keep this creation in the Learning Commons or they can take it home to work on more. They may even want to consider participating in the Global Cardboard Challenge Event at the Lexington Technology Center on October 11. If you would like to participate as a class, let me know and we can work something out!

The Makerspace Moments schedule:

Tuesdays 9am - 10am AND 12:30pm-1pm

Wednesdays 12pm - 1pm
