21 Sports ... 1 Team ... LET'S GO BRICKS!!
Drawing inspiration from the band Foreigner,
"It's as COLD AS ICE ... we just had to sacrifice one day ...
we won't pay the price ... e-learning helped to clear the way"
Despite Jack Frost and friends wreaking havoc, winter sports were able to find some time to compete this week! Girls basketball wrapped up the regular season, boys basketball fought the Morton Govs to the wire, gymnastics took to the road and 'landed' a pair of competitions and wrestling logged the 1st stop on the post-season #BrickRode with a TAKE DOWN over at the Portage Sectional!
Bundle up ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Goal = follow the #BrickRode to the land of Indy for the STATE FINALS!
On Saturday, Hobart hit the road over to Portage for the IHSAA Sectional competition. In order to advance to next week's IHSAA Regional (hosted by the Brickies), an individual must finish in the top 4 of his weight class. The Brickies have been really good all year ... and Saturday confirmed the hype as our boys ROCKED the Sectional and advanced 13 out of 14 weight classes to next weekend! The Hobart grapplers finished 2nd overall by compiling 255.5 team points ... just 32 behind the host Portage Indians (#6 in the state) - who won their 11th consecutive title.
Here are the results from each weight class where Hobart advanced:
106 - Freshman Ruben Padilla - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
113 - Freshman Trevor Schammert - 3rd place
120 - Sophomore Cristian Padilla - Sectional RUNNER-UP
126 - Junior Nathan Schammert - Sectional RUNNER-UP
132 - Freshman Dakota Vanderberg - 4th place
145 - Junior Hayden Homoky - 3rd place
152 - Sophomore Tyler Turley - Sectional RUNNER-UP
160 - Freshman Jacob Simpson - Sectional RUNNER-UP
170 - Senior Jacob Vode - 3rd place
182 - Sophomore Cameron Smith - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
195 - Sophomore Bobby Babcock - SECTIONAL CHAMPION
220 - Junior Mark Mummey - Sectional RUNNER-UP
285 - Junior Chad Mclean - Sectional RUNNER-UP
3 CHAMPIONS ... 6 RUNNERS-UP ... 3 in 3rd ... 1 in 4th ... as Adam Sandler might say, "Not too shabby" :)
Nice work BOYS and congratulations to Coach Cook and staff for such a TERRIFIC SHOWING!! GOOD LUCK NEXT WEEK!!

Girls
With two games on the schedule this past week ... our Lady Brickies were only able to play 1 thanks to Mother Nature. On Saturday morning, Hobart traveled to our Porter County neighbor Wheeler for their regular season finale. The Bearcats jumped out to an 11-3 lead after 1 quarter of play behind some timely shooting and bend-but-don't-break defense. In the 2nd quarter, the Lady Brickies tried mounting a run, but Wheeler was able to "hold court" and went into the halftime break leading 25-11. The Lady Brickies came out inspired in the 2nd half ... battling for loose balls, grinding it out on D-D-D-DEFENSE and working together for good shots on the offensive end to win the half 26-22! Unfortunately, the Bearcat lead was too much to overcome and we came home with another tough loss, 47-37.
Junior Grace Nestich led Hobart with a season-high 20 points ... sophomore Lexi Williams scored 7 ... senior Amaya Shinkle - back in action after missing several games due to a concussion - and junior Kora Neace chipped in 4 points each.
Our Lady Brickies open Sectional play at Merrillville this FRIDAY NIGHT @ 6:00pm - GOOD LUCK GIRLS!

Boys
Homecoming was supposed to be Friday night, but the weather man decided to postpone the game until Saturday morning ... which means HOMECOMING is put on HOLD for now. Today's game was ALL BASKETBALL against Hammond Morton. The 1st quarter was ALL BRICKIES as Hobart jumped out to a 14-6 lead behind some hot shooting from outside. In the 2nd 8 minutes, it was the Governors who asserted themselves - turning defense into offense and closing the gap to 1 ... 24-33 ... going into the break. The 3rd and 4th quarters were a DAWG FIGHT (I would day "dog", but it really was more of a "dawg" fight) as the two teams went back and forth, trading baskets until the final minute. With the score tied at 44, each team had a chance to win, but each attempt was off-target and we got an extra 4 minutes!
In the OVERTIME, Hobart struck 1st with a 3 from the wing ... then both teams traded FT's ... a Morton basket cut the Brickie lead to 1-point at 48-47 with about a minute to go. Hobart couldn't convert and the Govs took advantage, scoring with about 30 seconds remaining to go up 48-49. Sophomore Riley Johnston attacked the rim at about the 12-second mark ... his missed shot fell into the arms of freshman Anthony Williams, but the Morton D stripped the ball and Hobart was forced to foul. The Govs hit 2 FT's for a 48-51 lead. Hobart had one more chance, but a contested 3 from the wing missed it's mark and Morton was able to escape with the 3 point victory.

These fine young ladies were such great representatives of H-town when they were in school ... it is AWESOME to see them continue to SHINE in all they do!!
