News for families of Margarita Middle School
From the Principal
Hello Mustang Families!
I write this with a sense of urgency and a desire to provide relevant information to help you as you parent your middle schooler. If you haven’t watched a video regarding the Tik Tok algorithm, I strongly encourage you to do so this week (WSJ Report).
If you were to come home and find an adult in your house speaking to your children and telling them to do or believe things that are contrary to what you value and hold true, you would throw the adult out and call the police. Every time you came home thereafter, you would make sure there were no more strange adults in your home. When it comes to social media, we must be just as diligent; we cannot view it as a one-time caution, and an occasional check of a computer or cell phone.
I believe that social media is and will be the greatest threat to our children. Recently an article came out noting that China has begun limiting access to social media to 40 minutes per day for children under 18 (Article link). If a communist country recognizes the dangers social media is having on its youth, how much more should we do everything we can to protect our children from these same dangers?
I recently read some parents’ comments to a social media news article that stated their children do not have social media apps on their phones, and therefore they did not sense a need to engage this topic. While their comments may be accurate, it does not mean their children are not accessing the sites. In my experience, I have seen children create secret accounts, or more commonly they access a friend’s account. It only takes one friend with an app to make this happen.
What are we as a school community to do? Recognize the dangers of exposing our children to social media. Be diligent to regularly check their phone/computer internet browsing history and corresponding “cookies”. Secondly, it is truly a heart issue, and children need to see your heart behind the desire to protect them.
I hope this information helps to strengthen your family as we strive to work together for the good and growth of our middle school students. We are here to partner with you.
Thank you for your help in making the Margarita Family so great!
Sincerely,
Mr. Duane Legg

Lunch Detention Policy
Students can receive detentions for things such as tardies to class and behavior issues. These detentions are primarily to be assigned out of school hours, such as before or after school. In middle school, a large portion of students are still being picked up by family members or friends, which can cause these detentions to interrupt students from getting home. Daylight hours can also be a concern when assigning detentions outside of school hours. In order to support students getting to where they need to be outside of school hours, our practice for detentions will be to assign them during the school hours, such as break or lunch (students will still be provided time to eat). This will allow students to continue with their before and after-school transportation as usual. If you would prefer your child serve any assigned detentions outside of school hours, please let us know by clicking here.
