Sunnyside High School Best Practices
FAFSA Information Assembly: In August/September before the FAFSA opens all seniors attend a FAFSA information assembly hosted by the Sunnyside counseling team. During the assembly seniors learn about what the FAFSA is, why its important to complete; Information needed to complete the FAFSA, and resources available for assistance.
FAFSA Kick-off Assembly: The counseling team team and school administration collaborate with the student council to host a FAFSA kick-off assembly for all seniors once the FAFSA is available on October 1st. The student body president addresses the importance of the FAFSA to their fellow classmates and builds excitement for the senior class to become motivated to complete the FAFSA.
Student Surveys: All seniors complete a confidential student survey in their senior college & career prep course. The surveys are used by the counseling team to identify which seniors are unable to complete a FAFSA. This allows for the counseling team to provide scholarship and other funding resources for those students so that they have options and assistance to help fund their post-secondary education.
Communication: The counseling team sends out a letter to all parents in English and Spanish explaining what the FAFSA is, and why it is important for their students to complete it. The letter also includes FAFSA workshop dates and resources for students and their parents to assist with completing the application.
FAFSA Support Thursday's: Every Thursday, during the month of October, the counseling team along with local college access professional host FAFSA assistance sessions during the school day to assist students with completing the FAFSA. They also coordinate FAFSA support events for parents each month throughout the school year so that students and their parents can get assistance with the FAFSA.
FAFSA Friday's: Time to celebrate! During the senior lunch hours seniors who have completed a FAFSA receive prizes, treats and fun incentives to celebrate that they completed their FAFSA. Many of the local college and universities donate items to giveaway as incentives to students.
