Language Arts
6th Grade
Your student will be taking the STAR reading assessment again in the next couple of weeks to give them their new reading range for AR. Please encourage your student to read each night even if it isn't assigned, so we can avoid the land rush to complete the AR Goal by the end of the second quarter.
5TH GRADE
In the upcoming week/weeks, students will continue to use the RACE writing in response to answer extended response questions. We will also be studying character traits and author's point of view. I am starting to see improvement in the kids' writing and know that the more we write, the better we will write.
I would like to ask all parents to continue to have their child read at home each night towards their AR goal. Many of our kids have shown what wonderful readers they are by not only reaching their goal, but passing their goal. Great job to those who are working on this every day.
Below you will see one type of game, the kids play ,to reinforce their skills.
Social Studies
6th Grade
We started out in class discussing the different forms of governments. The students explored the different characteristics of each of the 4 that the Department of Education states are required, but we spent a few days going over some of the others as well. The students finished the discussion with an activity that they seemed to enjoy. They worked in groups and using gummy bears arranged them on a page that represented that particular government.
Government
10. Governments can be categorized as monarchies, theocracies, dictatorships or democracies, but categories may overlap and labels may not accurately represent how governments function. The extent of citizens’ liberties and responsibilities varies according to limits on governmental authority.
The students will be finishing out the quarter with their study of Geography. Particularly the 5 themes of Geography. Using the Mnemonic Device, My Hand Really Likes Pizza. ASk your students and they can explain this to you!
Geography
3. Globes and other geographic tools can be used to gather, process and report information about people, places and environments. Cartographers decide which information to include and how it is displayed.
4. Latitude and longitude can be used to identify absolute location.
5. Regions can be determined, classified and compared using various criteria (e.g., landform, climate, population, cultural, or economic).
6. Variations among physical environments within the Eastern Hemisphere influence human activities. Human activities also alter the physical environment.
7. Political, environmental, social and economic factors cause people, products and ideas to move from place to place in the Eastern Hemisphere in the past and today.

History
2. Early Indian civilizations (Maya, Inca, Aztec, Mississippian) existed in the Western Hemisphere prior to the arrival of Europeans. These civilizations had developed unique governments, social structures, religions, technologies, and agricultural practices and products.

MATH
6TH GRADE MATH
The major work in Grade 6 includes applying and extending previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers. In Chapter 3, students work toward an understanding of the complete rational number system. Comparison of values, location on a number line, and coordinates in a two-dimensional plane are all extended to include negative numbers. Students also extend their understanding of number sorting, comparison, and conversion to include any rational numbers.

5TH GRADE MATH
In Grade 5, students expand their range of arithmetic concepts and skills to include greater multi-digit whole numbers than in previous grades, as well as decimals to the thousandths place. Starting in Chapter 3, students also extend their knowledge of place value concepts to include decimals in comparison and rounding problems.
The first part of Chapter 3 covers naming, comparing, and rounding decimals to the thousandths place. The later part of Chapter 3 extends addition and subtraction strategies to include decimals, first with modeling and then with the standard addition and subtraction algorithms.
