Welcome Back!

Wow, what a start! As sad as we were to end the school year the way we did last year, we are equally as excited to be back! Our students bring so much joy into the building; we are grateful for the opportunity to work with them. They have shown up every day ready to learn, and they have demonstrated an eagerness to be successful. We're aware that potential obstacles exist as we navigate our new norm, but we are off to a fantastic start - hats off to both grades!

Buzzing Into the Building

The entrances of all schools are now locked, so we will buzz you in if you need to enter the building. This is not our preference, but we are doing so in order to limit extra traffic in the building.

If you have things for your students, you may drop them off in the vestibule inside our front doors. Please use the notes on the cart to put their names on the items.

Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and it looks like work.

How do my Student's Grades Get Calculated?

Students grades are calculated on a 4 point scale. The 4 point scale calculates the student grades using an average of the students’:

  1. Assessments, Projects, or Performance on standards
  2. Finals or Final Projects (when a final is included it can impact the letter grade +- of what the letter grade is)
  3. Daily Work = Practice (not figured into letter grade)
Using the following conversion.

Please Return Library Books

If you still have any books from last school year, they can be returned to any building, and we will be sure to get them back on our shelves.

What in the World is the GREAT Rubric?

The GREAT Rubric is our way of still measuring our students' character and human skills at Pella Middle School; we will self-assess quarterly on this. We feel very strongly about making sure we are creating citizens, and this tool has been helpful in measure our citizenship and non academic skills. The areas we will be assessing are below.

G - Gives Effort

R - Responsible

E - Engages in Learning

A - Accountable

T - Treats Others With Respect

Middle School Sports - 2020-21 Participation Forms

In order to practice or play in any of our athletics, we need a copy of the student athlete's annual physical. The forms needed to be completed by your health care professional are in the following link: Athletic Forms. Most insurance plans do not allow more that one physical a year, so if you had one completed during the past school year, it will be valid for 13 months. Once your physical is completed, please keep it in a safe place, and we will instruct you when to turn it in later in the summer. If you have any questions regarding MS athletics, please do not hesitate to send me an email.

Can I Play if I am Failing A Course? Please read the Pella Middle School Academic Eligibility Policy to find out!

The faculty and administration of Pella Middle School have developed the following expectations for students who are failing classes and participating in extra-curricular activities. If you are failing any courses, you will be ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities for two weeks and be expected to come to the Wednesday after school study table during that time. The Counselor Connection

Greetings from the counselor corner! We are so excited to have your students back in the building. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and flexibility as we get the year started! It’s going to be a great one!

Our district recognizes that due to our current circumstances students’ are more likely to be experiencing anxiety at some level or another. We are working diligently to give your students a chance to start their school day on a positive note. We are also collecting information on Monday and Fridays regarding how your child is feeling so we can best address these issues as they may arise. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Looking forward to challenges and joys that are ahead.

Sincerely,

Jourdan Van Wyk, School Counselor
