Students Return to In-Person Learning
Last week we were excited to welcome our kindergarten and first grade students to onsite Core classes. We have now surveyed all families, grades K-12 to find out which students want to come onsite for in-person instruction from their teachers for all grades. Below you will find the schedules for K-4 Core classes. After the school district has established guidelines for grades 6-12, we will begin scheduling grades 5-12 for onsite classes as well. Because our PREP classes are multi-grade 5/6, we will schedule those grades together for an onsite schedule.
The days and times for grades K – 4 are listed below. The length of time a student stays onsite depends on if the student is taking one, or both, Core ELA and Math classes for that grade. The inclusive times below would be for students taking both ELA and Math Core classes. You will be notified of your child’s exact cohort group and schedule soon.
Kindergarten – Mondays, beginning February 22, 9:00 – 11:30
Remote Plus - Mondays, beginning February 22, 9:30 – 11:00
1st Grade – Thursdays, beginning February 25, 8:45 – 11:40
2nd Grade – Thursdays, beginning March 11, 8:45 – 11:40
3rd & 4th Grades – Thursdays, beginning March 18, 8:30 – 11:20
Class Schedule for the 21-22 School Year
In a typical year, SA posts the class schedule in the spring for your review and for scheduling into fall classes. This has been far from a typical year, with still an abundance of unknowns. What we have learned from our recent surveys is that there is a strong interest for students to again be onsite for in-person learning. We also know that it is still very possible to likely, that some modifications to the usual will be necessary for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
We have decided to postpone our announcement of the fall schedule until later in the summer, with onsite class registration scheduled for some time in August. For PREP and AC students, this is less of “what classes will I be taking” because those are mostly set, but as to which days of the week and times will be decided in August. The unknowns affect our LC students more because the electives vary more year-to-year. We extend our apologies to our families in advance, but we believe that this will be less disruptive and confusing for everyone if we wait until it gets closer to the fall and the situation with COVID is clearer.
For families enrolling in LC remote classes, you will still be able to set-up those classes with your advisor before the end of this school year. In this instance, remote classes refer to those courses set-up on student learning plans where the SA teacher meets with the parent and student once a month, and not those remote classes that have weekly Zoom sessions with a SA teacher providing direction instruction.
What we do know from our most recent survey is that there is a very strong interest for in-person learning to resume. We will build a schedule that maximizes in-person learning as much as our space, staffing, and health/safety guidelines will permit.

Choice Transfer Request Deadline
For families that live outside of the Mount Vernon School District, please take note that you will want to submit your Choice Transfer by no later than May 15th. At that time, we will begin to review all Choice Transfer requests for acceptance into Skagit Academy. If you do not have your Choice Transfer submitted by that date, you will run the risk of losing your enrollment spot at Skagit Academy and be placed on a waiting list. This is especially important for students who currently have spots in our PREP and AC programs. The lack of a Choice Transfer by May 15 may lead to a student on the waiting list replacing your child in PREP or AC. To complete the Choice Transfer request, visit the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Choice Transfer Request Portal at https://eds.ospi.k12.wa.us/choicetransferrequest
Materials and Fines
This is a quick reminder that at the end of the school year we will be collecting all non-consumable materials checked out to students. This includes all Chromebooks. You will get additional information in the months to come about the process for bringing back materials. As noted at the beginning of the year, any materials not returned will be assessed as fines to the family’s account until the materials are returned, or until the fines are paid. If you have some SA materials that you are no longer using, you may arrange to return them to us by contacting Roycie DiTullio, rditullio@mvsd320.org, who manages our Curriculum Resource Center.
Annual State Testing Update
We are waiting on guidance from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) regarding the Smarter Balanced Assessment for this school year. OSPI is requesting a waiver from the US Department to do sample testing instead of testing all students this spring. It is not known yet whether or not it will be approved. We will update you on this issue as we know more about the waiver and any next steps that might affect us at Skagit Academy.
INTENT TO RETURN for 2021/22 - PREP and ACADEMY
**If you are unsure at this time, your student can indicate that on the form (might move, not sure). It's important that each student submits a form to reserve their space, but if you think you may be leaving, please submit the form as a 'yes' or indicate that you are not sure yet.
