NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
April 26, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
As we look ahead to next year we are hoping to create more inclusive and welcoming ways to start the year for all families. We also want to build stronger relationships with all of you and provide more opportunities for effective two-way communication from the first days of school.
One of our first steps is redesigning our Back to School Night. This evening has traditionally been challenging for families to attend due to lack of child care and it has been equally challenging for us to provide adequate supervision for students. Therefore, we are currently designing a more inclusive event for next year. Our Open House will start with a community dinner outside with parents and children. We’re also excited to highlight our newly renovated playground that evening! After dinner and teacher introductions, we will all move inside the building for open house-style classroom visits. Children can show you their classrooms and introduce you to their teachers. Important classroom and grade level information will be provided in handouts, rather than the traditional lecture format. Teachers will be available for informal conversations. Our hope is that this more inclusive event will build stronger connections between home and school.
Additionally, we will be reformatting our supply drop off/meet & greet/popsicle event the day before school starts. Many of you reached out to me that this was a difficult way to start off the year because it was in the afternoon and working families could not get here. Teachers also expressed that it was challenging to receive all classroom supplies at once. For the 2019-2020 school year, we will have an optional supply drop off the day before school starts. We will not have popsicles or other community information as we’ve had in the past. We would like to invite students to bring supplies with them for the first few days of school or even bring them to the Open House on August 22nd.
We hope these changes are responsive to your feedback and help to create more inclusive events that foster deeper relationships with you!
Have a great weekend!

Music News
Once again we are ending the year with special Talent Times for 1st - 5th grade. Your child will have their Talent Times in the gym according to the schedule below.
This is a chance for your child to share any talents they would like to present, some of which might include soccer, hockey, joke-telling, story reading, dancing, sharing a piece of artwork, bike riding, rollerblading, etc. And of course, any musical talent they would like to share. The only requirements are that the students need to practice before and be ready to present a performance to their class, whatever their talent is.
Parents, grandparents, friends, and siblings are welcome and encouraged to attend! Hope to see you then/there.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (April 22 -26, 2019)
Conflict isn't usually much fun, but students learned how to make conflict resolution less intimidating this week. While Kinders practiced sharing how they felt, describing the problem objectively, and suggesting a solution, 1st and 2nd graders used "spinners" that illustrated 7 useful strategies for resolving conflicts. They are: Ignore it/Walk away, Share and Take Turns, Play with someone else, Ask them to Please Stop, Talk to the Person to Solve the Problem, Apologize, or Ask an Adult to help coach you through the conflict.
Third graders designed Superheros who utilized collaborative steps to resolve conflicts. 4th/5th grade played a Jeopardy-like game show where they demonstrated calming strategies, I-messages, perspective-taking, taking responsibility for their part, and brainstorming to reach a solution. Practicing these steps while calm builds neural pathways to the problem-solving part of our brains. Those healthy pathways can be drawn upon when we face a real conflict. So, practice! practice! practice! Read more at: Coaching Siblings to Work Through Conflicts
