EGMS NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2023
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL
Grandview Families -
I wanted to officially let you know that I have made the difficult decision to retire at the end of the school year. It has been an honor to serve as a public educator for the last 33 years and my greatest honor to serve the community of Elkhorn for the last 25 years. I am very blessed to have landed in such a wonderful place. The Elkhorn school district is full of amazing people and I will miss EVERYONE and EVERYTHING!
You have a lot to be proud of - you live in a great community, you have great schools, and you have GREAT kids! Thank you.
Mr. Tomjack

2023 STANDARDIZED ACHIEVEMENT TESTING at EGMS
Students at EGMS will have an important stretch of standardized testing beginning April 3rd. ALL students will be taking the state reading test (NSCAS-R) and state math test (NSCAS-M). Eighth graders will also be taking the state science test (NSCAS-S). The following is a tentative testing schedule:
April 3 - 7: ALL students will be taking the state Reading test (NSCAS-R).
April 11 - 14: ALL students will take the state math test (NSCAS-M).
April 17 - 21: 8th Grade students at EGMS will take the state Science test (NSCAS-S).
April 24 - May 5: ALL students will take MAP. This is the third administration of the MAP test this year and will show the growth of each student over the course of the year. MAP will assess students in the area of reading, math, language, and science.
These are all very important assessments that truly allow us to measure the academic growth of each student. Please insist that your child is getting plenty of sleep and eating breakfast each morning. We would appreciate you not scheduling appointments for your students on these days. If you absolutely must take your child out of school please let us know well ahead of time so that we may avoid having to interrupt any classrooms during a test. If you have any questions regarding these assessments please contact Mr. Tomjack.

7th GRADE PARENTS
DROP OFF & PICK UP
We again want to thank everyone for your patience during drop off and pick up. We understand it is never fun to wait in line but we do appreciate your understanding. If you arrive between 3:15-3:25 that is the most congested time. Traffic does not start moving until about 3:23. Remember to please pull forward when you are in a designated pick-up zone.
A few reminders as the weather warms up:
Drop Off - Doors will not open until 7:40 am. During drop-off, please take advantage of making your students exit the vehicle whenever you are stopped and students can safely exit curbside. This would be along the entire front (North) side of the building and even as the line wraps around the building. Students can exit and walk to the front. The goal is to get 10-20 cars emptying at a time rather than 5.
Pick Up - We would like to encourage 7th & 8th graders to get picked up in the front and 6th graders to get picked up in the back. The tendency is for kids to gravitate to the back because that is the first place they could get picked up. If most kids get picked up in the same location, then things become more stagnant. In reality, we need as much balance as possible so traffic continues to flow.
Thanks for all you do to keep our kids safe!
HANDBOOK DRESS CODE REMINDER
As the weather gets warmer, questions arise about dress code. The middle school dress code is one of common sense, parental approval, and personal pride. Not all current fashion trends are considered appropriate according to the Middle School Handbook. (midriff tops, large holes or cuts in clothing that exposes the body, logos or slogans that are sensitive and cause a disruption in the school day) Please consult the handbook for clothing that is considered acceptable for school. If a student is in violation of the school dress code policy he/she will be addressed by a counselor or administrator. He/She will be given the opportunity to find an acceptable change of clothing for the remainder of the day. Continuous violations of the dress code policy may result in disciplinary action. Thank you for your continued support of maintaining a safe and disruption free learning environment.
SPORTS PHYSICALS FOR 2023-2024
All 7th & 8th graders for the 2023-2024 school year who plan to participate in sports at EGMS along with any 6th grader who wishes to participate in running club will need a sports physical indicating that they are cleared without restriction. Please contact your health care provider to arrange for your child to get a Sports Physical for next year. Keep in mind that Sports Physicals for next school year must be dated after May 1, 2023. Most physician offices will get very busy in late summer so schedule your appointments early. Fall sports will begin the first week of school in August and students are not allowed to participate without having a Sports Physical turned in. If your student is a 7th grader for 2023/2024 they require a full physical which will cover the Sports Physical requirement.
SUMMER ACTIVITY CAMPS
Each summer Elkhorn coaches and sponsors offer a variety of sports/activity camps for students of all ages. Look for more information to be forthcoming in April.
Please note: Elkhorn Public Schools only posts summer camp information for camps hosted by an EPS coach or sponsor as related to his or her duties within the school district.
