PLE Principals Updates
January 24, 2021
Dear PLE Community,
We welcomed our 2nd graders back to school this week. They were met by greeters and had temperature checks and health attestations done before entering the classroom. Putting our safety protocols in place, we had students line up on the markers outside the building by the 2nd-grade entrance. Families waved goodbye from the sidewalk/parking lot as our students were welcomed by our greeters with a huge ‘hello’ and ‘welcome back’ checking for visible symptoms and completed attestations. Anyone who didn’t have an attestation, which was only 5, families were contacted by Shawna to ensure that the students were healthy and symptom-free to be back in school. Students traveled, keeping social distance, to their classrooms and were greeted by their teachers with a big hello, welcome back, and temperature check. Our students read books, drew pictures, had writing activities and community building activities as well as some movement breaks.
Gratitude to all the staff involved in getting our school ready prior to our student arrival. A special thank you to all of our amazing team - Erynn, Debbie Gordon, Shawna Rooney, Silvano Gonzalez, James Thompson, and Sadean Alali.
Celebrations (Day 1):
- Students' smiles
- Staff attestation- 100% completion
- Students attestation- 29 out of 34 parents completed the attestation
- Students attendance- 27 out of 34 students were present
What we are working on (Day 1):
- Dismissal - We will have specific spots for students to stand up while waiting for their car.
- Attestation- We need help from all parents to complete the attestation.
- Childcare- We need to move the Boost program to a different room, so the students in the kindergarten hybrid program and boots do not use the same entrance/exit. We are keeping students by cohorts. The boost program entrance would be in the back of the building around the gym.
Looking Ahead:
- 2nd-grade students will continue attending school in-person this week.
- Delayed return for first graders this week. BSD is still meeting with the teachers’ union, the Bellevue Education Association, to reach an agreement on returning to the classrooms. For those of you opting for hybrid learning, we want to make sure your student return is successful. First graders will not be returning to buildings on Monday. We are hopeful to have good news soon on an agreement.
Warmly,
Melisa Macias, PLE Principal

PLE Pick-up and Drop-off Procedures (Car Riders )
Please follow the Phantom Lake parking lot guidelines when dropping off or picking up your child before or after school. We have a very small parking lot and we are asking for your help and cooperation to ensure that students, families, and staff can enter and exit school grounds safely.
1.Use the north parking lot located by the school gym/school café. The south parking lot (closest to Tillicum Middle School) is closed before and after school. It will not be available for student drop-off/pick-up.
2.Pull forward to the drop-off/pick-up area, marked by a yellow line next to the chain linked
fence. Pull as far forward as possible when you are in the drop-off/pick-up lane. You may
have to wait in a line before reaching the marked pick-up/drop off area. There is no parking in this area – only pick-up/drop-off.
3. When you pull up to the designated area, please wait at your car for a staff member to retrieve or deliver your child and then pull ahead to exit. Please keep the line moving! If you need to talk with another parent or a teacher, park your vehicle in a parking space or on a side street in the neighborhood.
4.DO NOT leave your vehicle unattended in the drop-off lanes. If you must park your vehicle, PARK ONLY IN DESIGNATED PARKING SPACES. DO NOT BLOCK BUS OR FIRE LANES. If the parking lot is full, you may need to park on the street next to the school or on another side street.
5.Remember that at high-traffic times of day, right turns in and out of the school parking lot will help traffic flow more smoothly.
6. Have patience! Plan for a few minutes in your morning or afternoon routine for drop-off and pick-up.
Walkers
Students will be dismissed by the same entrance door. Parents need to wait for students far from the entrance/exit door. Please see the map above.
Health Check
Each student must complete the health attestation (Health Check (bsd405.org)) prior to entering the building daily. Download the app on your smart phone if you have not done so already. It makes it quick and easy to do before leaving your home.

Playgrounds Update: Closed to the Public During School Hours
With schools reopening, playgrounds will be closed to the public during school hours and be used exclusively. Signs are posted at each playground. We ask that families respect these closures to help keep our students and our community safe and healthy.

Specialist Schedule
We are so excited to begin providing grades K-2 in-person instruction in the coming weeks. To ensure your student continues to access learning from their specialist educators (Physical Education, Library, Music, and Art) your student will receive Microsoft Teams invites to be accessed during the asynchronous learning time at home. If your student attends in-person instruction in the mornings, your student will access the specialist educators in the afternoon virtually. If your student attends in-person instruction in the afternoons, your student will access the specialist educators in the morning virtually.
To accommodate this new morning and afternoon schedule, PLE has blended students that attend in-person in the mornings or afternoons from multiple homerooms together for their specialist time. Your student may see two calendar invitations within Teams from each specialist, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Students will only join the specialist time when they are at home. While in-person at school, their homeroom teacher will not have your student join the teams call virtually.
We look forward to serving your student as they begin our temporary morning or afternoon model of instruction. We are pleased to continue to provide access to Physical Education, Library, Music, Art, and Computer Science virtually as well.
